Another good race tonight. We got pretty close to Pete with about 15 mins to go and then he just pulled away. Sue sailed her Moth tonight. After a poor start she got her act together and finished ahead of a Comet and a Solo (which subsequently retired) Her boat certainly looks quick and with her feather weight fore and aft trim seems irrelevant. The boat looks right wherever she sits!!
So: -
1st Moth (Pete) 2nd N12 3rd Supernova 4th Moth (Sue) 5th Comet 6th Solo

Well done to Sue, knew it would be a good boat for her in light winds. Well done to Pete too.

Just one Moth out last night. Slightly different in that the wind picked up about 2/3 of way through the race. Didn't effect the outcome with Pete winning but the N12 did close the gap considerably in the last 15 mins or so.
We are just tying to work out why Whynot doesn't seem to be getting to the front in Sunday races. The first time I thought it might have been that the race was held in handicap rather than pursuit format. but then last Sunday it was a pursuit and the same thing happened. Same standard of competition in the same boats (though more of them), same water and same wind. Answers on a postcard.......

It might suggest Pete is far too laid back on a Sunday, you'll have to gee him up before the start... or maybe it's just too much breakfast?

To be fair Pete hasn't done many Sundays in the moth & they have all been breezy, also the fact that more boats are on the water have an effect, traffic can really slow you up in a moth. Getting caught up in a gaggle of N12's & Supernovas can be a real nightmare especially if they all start messing each other up & don't get clear. The other Sunday factor can be having more boats starting ahead (several Comets & the Duo).
Laura may also have a point about Pete being laid back &/or having too much breakfast, he is always last to arrive on Sundays even now he's one of the first to start

Nat 12s and Supernovas messing each other up?!!! Elaine wash your mouth out!! I really do my best not to get into altercations as invaraibly the rest of the opposition get away whilst it is going on. TBH there is a lot less messing up nowadays since serious luffing was constrained by revisions to RRS.
I still dont understand why WHYNOT didn't shine in the recent handicap races. She started in slow handicap fleet 5 mins ahead of those pesky N12s and Supernovas and on the water we never really got that close to her but beat her on corrected time. I think the extra traffic slows us all up and those starting last have more traffic to try and get through...
There might be something in the Breakkfast thing. Perhaps he calls in at the Little Chef on the bypass on the way in!!

Probably not what you want to hear on here but we actually beat the Moth today in the N12 in mainly light airs by a reasonable margin. On present form surprised to find ourselves there and well chuffed. Ray and Dot in the Ent thought they had too but Pete fought very hard and pulled back into second place in the last minutes of the race........

Unusually for a Wednesday night a good stiff breeze that lasted for the whole race.
Pete got away fairly rapidly and had got a lap in at about the time that the Supernova started. However, conditions were perfect for the N12 and we caught up and overhauled the Moth fairly rapidly which then promptly capsized at the gybe mark where there was a Comet also in trouble. Pete discovered its propensity to turtle fairly rapidly and may be investigating mast buoyancy options! He managed to get it up and continue but the delay proved costly.
Conversation in the bar afterwards was about how rapidly the stability of the Moth seems to reduce as the wind speed increases. In comparision to the Supernova he feels that the fore an aft pitching seems like a fairground ride (which given the Moth's short waterline length and relatively large sail area is understandable!) Do you guys keep your weight aft in a blow on all points of sailing?

If I dont sit right at the back here in the Torridge estrury she goes over her nose in a blow with the full sail, but if I put the original sail on that came with the boat all is ok.Turtyling she does that too,no idea how to stop that, luckily the hobie cats can pick the mast upfor me,rules, wot rules

Now 4 moths at Leamington, we really do seem to be growing a nice fleet. Have got another potential mothist target in mind will point him in the direction of John Claridge tomorrow when I see him.

(and 1.30mins after me, in the supernova!!!! ;D)
