I have looked thro them before but I have just spent an hour or so looking at this years National pics again.
Apart from being pin sharp and very very good the pics themselves tell a story and contain very clear advice and the subject of so many training sessions I have had the pleasure of being involved with over the years.
So easy to see why the better helms are faster ...its not just boat trim, keeping the boat flat but the tune [rake and rig tension] sail setting and especially kicker tension.
The faster guys have a sail set that "breathes" and is not stiffled by an overtight kicker or outhaul. Almost without exception the front guys seem to be always looking at their sail whereas the vast majority are looking not at the sail but elsewhere.
Noticeably the quicker guys seem more committed to sit out harder and for longer and not content to let the boat heel.
This is all very basic and elementary stuff BUT all very valid.
To those that yearn to be faster and perhaps more competitive I urge you to look at the pics very closely...they really are superb. Don,t just look at the pics of yourself but look at others that you deem to be either slower and those that you know are faster.
Compare the rig , sail shape and setting and learn.
Look at the trim and balance ..Are you a Heeler or a Flattie ?
Finally look at the Body Language and facial expressions...Are you out there for the ride and fresh air or really trying.
My winter tip is ...
If you are a lightweight...Eat more Pies
If you are a Fatty ........... Eat less Pies
A suggestion to the Committee is to use these pics at the Training Session at Whitefriars next year.
Finally let me be the first to wish everyone a Happy Christmas .. and the BMBA every success in 2014.
