Some boats change colour every time they get sold..... This one gets a new deck!! This is deck number 4. She started life with a rear deck, (you could see the marks in the frames where it had been) then was converted into a self-drainer aka ironing board style;- that was a joke for inland sailing so was taken out, leaving long side-tanks and a box/shelf across the front of the platecase for support. Now the tanks are gone again! The hatch is a recent mod too, as it would have co-incided with the height of the box/shelf. So has the mast/sail changed since I last saw her..... Is this really Whippet?

I got this boat from Abby a few years ago and i think Rupert and Mark Collyer may have been former owners.

Lee is right - I bought Whippet from Rupert who had done some work on her - this looks like Whippet but in far better shape than I sold it to him!

I bought 533 from a chap somewhere near Northampton as he was then off to uni. At that time, as Godfrey says, it was an "ironing board" self drainer and as such was a nightmare to sail. I sold it to Godfrey probably sometime around 15/20 years ago. I believe he then converted it back to conventional layout and sold it on.

Whippet now has a new home with me in North London (thank you Mr and Mrs Mothless for helping me to load her up by moonlight). I absolutely love her, and am keen to find out all about her history. Please may I ask members to post any details they have, no matter how trivial? Many thanks.

I had her from 2002 'til 2005 when I replaced her with a late Skinner (which nothing like as fast on the river) went unbeaten through virtually the whole of 2003 at Chippenham I had a CVrda win at Shearwater in 2003and Rupert Whelan won The Frensham event in her (2004)

Thanks GMC that's really interesting and I greatly appreciate your help. 533 looks to be in pretty good condition but I'm keen to further improve her. What was supporting the centreboard case when you owned her? I think it might be wise for me to add in some more structure to this area, even though the woodwork is in good condition. Also, please could you tell me who I would need to speak to to find out if she could be measured? Thanks again for your help.

Hi - I owned Whippet for a while. at that point she had a "crew deck" to the back of the centreboard, making the whole area inaccessable, and indeed rotten as hell. At that point, I took her back to a shell, put a new case, bulkhead and decks on. I did a long cockpit with open sidedecks partly because I liked the look, and partly because I wanted to be able to get to the hull easily to check for soft patches. And the open side decks meant that I had somewhere to put my feet.
I'm sure the layout wouldn't be popular with some, but I liked it, and it kept the weight down, too. She certainly measured as a Moth when I sold her, which must have been about 7 years ago, when we moved house and I needed a boat reduction programme.
I didn't do much in the way of Moth meetings in her, but did take part in classics meetings (www.cvrda.org - plug, plug!) successfully. Was sad to sell - glad she has a good home

Hello Rupert - Thank you so much for your reply which was fascinating, and helped me to make much more sense of things. Whippet currently has a slight leak into the forward buoyancy tank, and around the rear of the c/b case. There is also a crack to the upper front of the case which was letting water in. Otherwise everything looks in really good shape.
I'm going to work my way through the repairs over the next few weeks, and hopefully epoxy / repaint the hull too. I'm also adding some feet to the front and rear of the c/b case for extra stiffness and support. A good second hand sail, perhaps Dacron, and perhaps even a better mast / boom should see her absolutely flying along, but such items seem very few and far between! Overall I really am very keen indeed on Whippet and really like the layout which is pretty much as you left it. Thanks once again for your reply.
