Hi all, pondering getting a moth for the light wind racing days at Stewartby when the catamaran that I usually sail is pretty dull. Just by chance I've found Bm 518 and 648 for sale within 10 miles of me. What are they like for tall people,I'm 6 ft 2?

Moths are fine for tall people as they have quite a high boom. My brother used to sail one & he's 6'2" so don't think it should be a problem.

Toby Cooper, Ed Deacon and Mark Wiltshire were all at Stewartby when the Moths were there a few weeks ago and they are all over 6' - if you check the scores you will see that Toby does rather well :>). So get one and have fun in light airs - but try one in a blow, that's fun too!

Evening Pike.... Yep Moths are tolerant little ships skinny or rotund ,short or lofty, lightweight or pie-appreciators they seem to cope with all. Sure the skinny guys have us on the reaches but the not so light gentlemen brigade usually have them up wind in anything of a breeze.Moth racing is really good fun and everyone can be in with a shout if the boat is sorted. 6- 2" is good ....you usually get served at the bar quick. 518 is an unknown to yours truly but if she is sound and preferably lightened with a reasonable rig and sail etc she will be worth considering. 648 is also unknown to me but same applies as with 518 if all is sound and she has reasonable kit then well worth a look at. You mention that you are looking for a light wind boat ... Well you would find it hard to find a better light airs boat than a British Moth. Keep us up to date on this forum with your progress. There was a Moth in the compound at Stewartby last year ....didn,t see it this year.If you need help just post something on here and usually you will bombarded with hopefully helpful advice instantly.

Welcome! Broxbourne Open in a couple of weeks, which incidentally is the home club of one of the afore mentioned tall Mothists and current leader of the Someville Trophy, Toby Cooper. I am sure he could give you some set-up tips.

Welcome aboard!
A moth is also fun when it is windy. Hope to see you around at an open meeting or two, and the Nationals are at Stewartby. It would be great to see you there.
Entry forms are available on the web
