For sale. British Moth 326. 1960’s Bossoms built. I have owned “Photopetor” for over 30 years and used to race her regularly at Hunts SC, but work and other commitments meant that she has not been sailed for nearly 20 years and, now living in Cornwall, my nearest Moth fleet is so far away that returning to competitive sailing with her is impractical. Stored dry in my garage for most of the time, she has spent the last 5 years in the open, although covered. Mainly complete and sound, the decking is de-laminating, but she shows little other sign of abuse, although will clearly need some renovation. More photos available on request. Proctor mast and RJ sails of 80’s vintage. No reasonable offer refused as I want to see her doing what she was built for. John Colgate, colga@btinternet.com

Could you let me have the details of the new owner so I can update the Fleet list. These can be emailed to secretary@britishmoth.co.uk or send me a message.
Many thanks
Simon

Thanks for that John. Got her home and parked in the drive. Looked at the long list of important jobs SWMBO had left me then looked at the sad little Moth sitting in the drive. Thought to myself 'I'll just remove that nasty bit of varnish. Then I thought I might as well remove the side deck where the ply had warped. Then I thought I might as well remove the front decks where they had delaminated. Mustn't forget to give the mast a bit of a polish - looks lovely now. SWMBO's list gets longer but the Moth looks really good!!. All the decks are now off. The hull looks solid. I now need to sort some decent ply. Robbins in Bristol do a nice line of strippy ply where the exchange rate is one sheet of ply for one gold bar. They also sell sheets in sizes which are just too small for the panels needed so you end up buying just under twice as much as you should realistically need. Anyway, life wasn't meant to be easy. Once again, thank you for allowing me to be her new guardian. Michael

Michael
I don't know where you are in the country, but if you contact Robins direct they may have some "Off cuts", which are usually just slightly smaller than a full sheet, and they are greatly reduced as well.

When I put new decks on my Moth, I used one 8'x4' sheet to cover the transom tank and the fwd tank. First I cut the aft piece off the end of the sheet.
The fwd is covered in two pieces with a join down the middle (on my boat there is a large piece of wood that supports it). The two fwd pieces are cut rotated so the centre lines are on opposite edges of the sheet with the aft edges on opposite ends. The curved edges pass each other in the middle.
I thought about it again, I used both sides of the sheet so one side was cut upside-down with the top face on the bottom of the sheet.
This makes it sound more complicated than it really is.
I got a sheet of marine ply from Champion in Surrey for about £30 which is a lot less than the varnish going on top of it!
For the amount that you are expecting to use, I wouldn't waste time tracking down off cuts as I don't think that what you need would be classed as offcuts.
