2012 is a special year for British Moths. We have completed the 2012 Years Programme although two dates are provisional and need to be confirmed. Most wanted more racing, more Opens and to provide more regional racing.... a tall order ! The Programme is ambitious with some 20 Open Meetings across the Country and some other Special Events starting off the season with a Classic/Moth Training Weekend at Whitefriars S.C. and including a "Salty Weekend" at Lymington/Salterns S.C. The Opens consist of 9 River and 11 Lake/Reservoir Venues. Splitting the country into four regions we have arranged 4 Opens in the London and Midlands Regions and 5 each in the East and West regions....each with River and Lake venues. Importantly we have tried to re-visit previous Moth stronghold Clubs[such as BASC,Broxbourne and Lymington]but also to try out "new" venues[Stewartby and Staunton Harold...both under consideration for the 2013 Championships].
Obviously we will not be able to please everyone...too many Opens, too far to travel, too close together and why are we not going to this Club or that Club. However I urge you all especially the Fleet Captains to motivate more turnout at their own Clubs, and to encourage as many as possible to support as many Opens as they can. Perhaps most importantly the 80th Anniversary Nationals at Northampton on August 8-11th is or should be a must attend for most. The spirit and friendliness within the Class that seems to heighten at the Nationals was fantastic in 2011...lets build on this for a really memorable 2012 Season and Championship.
A link to the Open & Event Programme will follow as will a complete list of Opens,Regatta,s and Open Handicap Events.

Ooops! Managed to remove the original thread whilst trying to change it to an announcement. I'm adding the dates etc to the web site calendar at the moment, so if anyone at the individual clubs would like information added to the events (camping, food, who to get in touch with etc) please let me know. ptp [at] just7.co.uk is probably the best way

Great programme, with several new venues! I would like to apologise now for not attending Chippenham and Whitefriars in July; Sam and I will be in Le Mans.

Changes to the 2012 Programme
Unfortunately the Tamesis Club Open scheduled for July 28th has had to be cancelled. [Due to Raod Closures around the area for the Olympic Cycling Event] An alternative date is being sought.
Some Good News is that we are in contact on a very positive footing with our friends at Welsh Harp about competing there next year. Date hopefully to be announced but I do urge as many of us as possible to attend. If we can arrange it Press and T.V. will be invited so no tatty shorts and tee-shirts !!!

Thought you might like to see a quote from the British Moth class history about how the Moths sailed at Tamesis in the 1950's at the Easter Regatta.. This is taken from Morris Metcalf a former member of Aquarius SC in Hampton "For us the season started with the Easter Regatta at Tamesis Club, located in Teddington. Their membership was rather exclusive, they sailed National 18's, and Thames Raters (usually in collars, ties and white yachting caps). Adjacent to their club they had leased a piece of land to the BBC Staff Association, Ariel SC. Ariel was very similar in size and character to Aquarius SC and quite an affinity grew between these two clubs and they also sailed British Moths. To take part in the regatta it was necessary to sail down river, I estimate to be around 6 miles, negotiations Molesey lock and Hampton Court Bridge and two further bridges at Kingston. A flotilla was made up of all boats and we sailed the week before down and temporary berths were provided. Being early in the season the regatta was usually favoured by strong winds and it was a thrilling sight to see over a 100 boats on the water and to compare performances with classes not normally encountered at the home club. Our perception of Tamesis Club was reinforced when on of the moths sailed by a young lady from Desborough capsized and filled close to the Tamesis moorings. She was unable to to recover the boat and it was towed by a rescue boat back the 50 yards to the Ariel SC slipway. The unfortunate helm swam ashore to the nearest point, and walked back in her cold, wet, condition carrying her plimsols to the Ariel Clubhouse. A typed note from the secretary of Tamesis swiftly followed complaining of inappropriate dress (barefoot was mentioned) and hoping that if similar circumstances reoccured, the person would be instructed to pass behind the Tamesis Club house! " So please note dress code for sailing at Tamesis is collar & tie and if you fall in an get wet, you need walk behind the club house. . These rules still apply as we dont wish to lower the standards! I have had to get special permission to allow Mr Witts through the gates!! ;D Yes apologies for the change in date but the Olympic cycling event will cause many road closures in the area making it very hard to access the club.. Hi Roger Last year I produced a longish piece extolling the beauty and attractions of Bury St Edmunds as a venue for the sailor and their (non sailing) partner. I don't have access to it at the moment ( currently Sydney but tomorrow New Zealand) but with the exception of the bits about the Royal Wedding it all still applies, if you would like to copy/reproduce it here. Bury is a lovely market town with lots to see and do and in easy reach of Cambridge/Norwich etc.... Merry Christmas everyone from Abby and Gary (currently stuck in a plane headed for Hong Kong/Auckland)

We are now officially in our 80th Year .....Hurrah!!! Happy Anniversary the British Moth Class..
Only our friends in the International Moth Class and Lymington Scows are listed as being older in the Single Handed Classes...remarkably they are 85 and 112 years old respectively![No doubt some bright spark will advise otherwise and declare that the Reading 15ft Skimmer is 250 years old]. What is important is that these Classes are still very much alive and still thriving...lets all look forward to a cracking year ahead.

Paul What more temptation can you need ... A chance to talk Moths and tweak for a couple of days and to sort out any issues you may have with your boat... Great chance to see how you are going on the water and to see yourself in video playbacks... Gentle coaching [only limited shouting and hollering !!!] Whitefriars is set in the Cotswold Water Park and is a cracking lake and a Club with excellent facilities, easy launching .Catering at the Club is limited. Details of the Moth Training Event to be announced within a week We will be guests of Whitefriars S.C. in this event shared with the CVRDA All British Moths Vintage,Classic or otherwise are invited. A two day event but with activities on both days Lots of accomodation on the Cotswold Water Park area and even Camping at Whitefriars for the intrepid. Essentially it will be Training Weekend giving advice on Moth set-ups and tune etc but specifically help with your own boat and most importantly a chance to chat with fellow Mothists. We have run 5 or 6 Moth Training Days at Frampton which are above elese good fun and I think have proved to be very popular. On the water coaching and lots of race practice. Have not checked with the other "Chumps " yet but guess there will be at least 2 and even the 3 re-united ! Hope I have tempted you ...see you at Whitefriars ! Roger Witts BMBA - Fixtures
