Seven boats lined up on the start line at Cam on Saturday - 4 from the home side along with Joe, Gary and myself. I thought conditions were just about perfect - sunny but not to hot, breezy, but not overpowering - and basically a lot of reaching with the odd close-hauled bit in between. We were able to start all at once heading to the upstream Club mark with what was called an 'interesting gybe' and then a long reach/fetch up to the Lock mark. The gybe was interesting as it was a very short leg with 7 boat vying for a good spot.
I will fill in the rest of the detail when Gary gets in this evening as he will remember better than I, but Rick Benson won the Cam Coffee Pot - a beautiful trophy - Joe was 2nd and Dave (Cam) was 3rd. I do recall that I was having a struggle with my lifting rudder, which lifts perfectly but the downhaul doesn't work at all. On the first lap of the second race I ended up bow in the reeds, got out and went back in again. I decided the best course of action was to climb out and push the boat off, because after all it was the Cam and therefore shallow - well where I went in it was over my head and the boat decided to follow me over. I hadn't tied my bits of string for righting lines on and with the mast and boom tangled in the weed (which was present but not a problem if you were upright) I had to have assistance.
I will finish this later, but Cam is a beautiful Club and the competition over a restricted but mostly open bit of River, is great fun. I hope more will jion us there in 2012.
