Hi All Having sent off my money for the Nationals, I thought I'd do Nutmeg's buoyancy test today and have a practice with capsizes and recoveries at the same time.
The good news - passed the buoyancy test The bad news - the centreboard split, where it narrows down between the 'handle' and the blade.
So, I need to get a new centreboard into Nutmeg before the Nationals, but I'm new to the class - how ?? Where can I buy a centreboard that will fit Nutmeg, and is it something I can fit myself. Bearing in mind the wooden one split, can I get a composite one which might be stronger ?
Help, or I'll be sitting on the shore watching you all...
Thanks, Andrew

Andrew Moth Centreboards are not an"off the shelf" item. They also vary in shape and thickness. No 1 suggestion and the easiest option is to investigate if the Centreboard can be repaired.A spliced/dowelled epoxied joint may suffice. If you are not up to this sort of repair do you have a local carpenter/or ideally boatbuilder who may be able to help? Otherwise to get a new Centreboard made in two and a half weeks is a big ask. You could try the following who are always willing to help.... Severn Sailboats- Graham Pope - Worcester. John Claridge - Lymiington Graham or John may be the best bet as they may have a s/hand board knocking around, Jeremy Higson - Evesham All the above will make you a new one. Looking on E-Bay and Apollo Duck to see if anyone is selling a C/Board that could be cut down/re-shaped. Finally try posting a direct AD on this forum . 827 is a JEP/CLarke Boat and does not have a removable Pivot Bolt. The pin is moulded in permanently to the C/Board case. I guess you know that to remove the Centreboard you have to remove two screws from Deck Clip that fits around the Pivot Pin. Tricky but with the right Screwdriver very do-able . Best way forward is to make a template and accurately measure the thickness....they are usually 22-25 mm thick but some were as thin as 20mm. A C/Board for a Clark boat may fit but may be too thick so will need reducing down in thickness by a friendly joiner after you strip off the paint ! Will ask around to see if we can help you.... It would be great to see "Nutmeg" again!!!! Roger Witts

Roger, Graham
You are both stars - this is the sort of support that makes this community of Mothists rather special IMHO. I drove over to Lymington on Monday taking the broken centreboard with me for John to have a look at. He thinks it is repairable and is going to have a go at it. (You see I did figure out how to remove the board, Roger - although the glassed-in pin stumped me for quite a while. I was up to my elbows in the bow tanks looking for the clips or nuts which held the pin in for a significant time until I thought to look up the slot... One of the screws is easy to remove but the other (on the far side of the Deck Clip) was a b****r!
The board was 28 - 29mm thick at its thickest point (the cheek ajacent to where the the Deck Clip fits)
John is hoping to bring the repaired board to the Nationals, but would it be too much to ask that Graham brings his new board so we can try that if needed ? I'll call you tomorrow, Roger - thanks for the message - and we can talk further.
Regards to all, Andrew

Andrew Glad you are getting sorted out ... A couple of others are bringing spare C/Boards too so you should have back up too... Yes I remember that other screw "round the corner" ! It may pay to make or adapt a special screwdriver. RW
