Frampton Moths kicked off the 2011 Season on 27/02/2011. The first FOSSC Club Championship Races saw three Moths out... Jezza "Banzai" Higson in the flying "Mog"- 861 Ian Haywood in "Scruff" - 871 RW in "Outsider" - 790. Wind [from the North]strengths were off-the- clock at times but rarely fell below Force 4 but with nasty gusts. The 1st race saw Jezza and Ian both get good starts while yours truly was left day-dreaming.As they all merrily headed off I was left in the "soup" of a 25 boat fleet and gave myself some work to do to catch up.Ian was caught on Lap 2 and gradually Jezza was reeeled in but cruely he hit a mark and let me through. On a very poor course we swopped places a couple of times before a huge squall/stormy session hit the Fleet.Ian was wiped out but both Jezza and I weathered it out.Final placings saw 790 as first Moth in 8th. After some rig adjustments to the newly tweaked 790 Tin-Rig she was performing considerably better in Race 2...Ian had gone home.A gap was quickly developed over Jezza but C/Board problems plus a jammed Rudder prompted me to retire leaving Jezza to scream and shout alone on some of the fast reaches.Another squall caused havoc but "Mog"kept on flying and completed the course admirably. 790 did not start Race 3 and 861 retired but giving Jeremy 8th overall and 790 16th.Well done Jeremy, but Ed Higson did better finishing 3rd overall in his Topper. So thats the Season started as we now take a break until mid- March when the Spring Series start. Roger Witts Frampton Moths 2011

13/03/2011 - First race in Spring/Summer H,cap Series. Glorious weather, light winds fading to very light and then virtually nothing mid -race. Only 1 Moth[yours truly in 790 trying more tweaks out]with "Wild Bill" electing to use the Europe.Pre-race we paced each other for a few laps in the strongest wind of the day. Really pretty boat Bill,s Europe[the Helm less so !] I managed[unusally] to make a cracking start was headed at times by an Enterprise and Phantom but managed to overhaul them and finish first boat across the line.Bill was going really well at times in non-Europe conditions but got caught up in traffic and dropped back.
Next Sunday 20/03/2011 is a 3 Race Club Championship Event where more Moths are expected to be out including the threatened return of "New Boy" who has announced his attendance. Mark...."Asbo"is the black boat ,blue cover with the Swans Nest on the foredeck !
Good to see Pete Lee M.W.Y.C. dropping in at Frampers to pick up a Sail and have a chat. Roger Witts Frampton Moths 2011

Another Club Championship Event at Frampton Sunday 20th March. Sparkling conditions with a gusty Force 4 S.W.breeze giving great sailing conditions and blinding planes down the Lake...but not Moth Handicap friendly conditions. 4 Frampton Moths ventured out in 2 of the 3 races among them the return of "New Boy",joined by Ian Haywood,Tony Latham and RW."Wild Bill" elected to use his Europe but on incident packed day hit the bottom while close to the shore in the 1st race and was involved in a crash with a Solo.in the 2nd..more resin repairs for Laura ! Long reaching legs on windier days to not suit Moths against reasonable Solos,Lasers and Enterprises. If ever there was evidence that the P.Y.Nos are just wrong for our little boats then yesterday was good evidence for this.Upwind or offwind against a Solo in that sort of breeze...no chance...did not stop us trying though ! Ian struggled a little at times but as ever battled on and looked more comfortable as the breeze eased halfway thro the 2nd race as did Tony but Mark looked to settle back in very quickly and was happy and beaming his big cheesey smile at being back on the water again. Making the starts in both races RW used "SameSame"880 in the first race sporting a new Selden all carbon rig with new North Sail and in "Outsider"790 the Classic dream-machine with Tin Rig in the 2nd."New Boy" chasing him in the 2nd race for half a lap until he fell back. Moth Results[Race 1-24 boats,Race 2-26 boats] Witts[880/790]--------- 5th/7th Wiltshire[873]----------- 18th/13th Haywood [871]---------- 19th/22nd Latham -------------------- DNF/21st The main discussion after racing seemed to centre around the Moth Handicap.Seemingly Frampton DID submit returns for the 2010 season but not if only 1 boat in any Class was entered. Although Moths are still racing off of 1168[the new P.Y.No is due to take effect in 2012] there is apparently some support in possibly a special adjustment to the P.Y No at Frampton. Sunday 27th March saw only 2 Moths out[790 and 756] in both afternoon Handicap Races. A predominantly reaching course with longish legs in the Force 3-4 gave us little chance against a Phantom,Byte,Lasers and Solo,s who were all making the best of the conditions. With a good start I managed to hold up a few quicker boats for a lap or two to end up 3rd out of 9 boats.Tony showed some good speed mid-race never recovered really recovered from a bad start. In 790[with 880,s Polyflex Sail] I made another good start but Tony Latham in 756 got away with a fabulous port end flyer to head the pack but only to throw the advantage away on the first leg with a self confessed navigation error ! All was going well at the front and again all the Solo,s and Lasers were behind me for a lap and a half until I was left on the long broad reach...as they planed away I was left big-time...took out my new knitting pattern and made a start on a sweater for "New Boy"! By the time I got moving a leg seperated me from the boat ahead ! 790 ended up 4th out of 18 with Tony not having one of his better days back in 13th after being in heavy Solo traffic for most of the race. "Wild Bill" was in his Europe in the 1st race and for once did not bump into anything ! Roger Witts FRAMPTON MOTHS

Sunday 3rd April...one Moth helm on duty, one out playing in his Europe and one ex-Moth helm putting his new Laser together saw only 2 Moths out racing. In the 1st race "New Boy" 872 made a cracking start and was almost a leg ahead before yours truly in 790 stoppped floundering around in the start area after stalling big-time and drifting backwards! The hunt continued for a couple of laps before a great race ensued between us in the fresh breeze."Wild Bill" took a ducking on the long run after some neat pirouetttes ! Eventually 790 took the lead over 872 to end up 7th with Mark 9th in a 12 boat fleet....hardly a staggeringingly good result in a principally reaching course and conditions that again favoured the quicker boats...ce la vie. With 790 sitting out the second race "New Boy" showed he was really back on form and was sailing well keeping many faster boats behing him until[ not for the first time !]he sat on his Carbon Tiller and reduced the length by half[100 kgs or thereabouts of Fireman versus 15 mm of Carbon Fibre means there is only one winner !].Mark continued but lost out upwind and ended up 11th overall out of 17 boats when a much higher position was deserved.

Only 2 Frampton Moths managed to make the MWYC Open... I managed to get some good breaks and win the event winning the first 2 races but Graham Pope deservedly took the 3rd race win from me with "X-Moth "[881]proving to be quicker than "Outsider"[790] upwind ...great race though and good to see Grahams new"telescopic mast working well.Ian Haywood again showed his liking for MWYC finishing equal 4th with John Claridge.J.C. was going really well at times and I amsure will go even better[ugh!]when the Pink machine is fully sorted.Mr Consistency on the day Andrew Perrott from Chippenham looked very comfortable and quick and ended up 3rd. The MWYC Moths all had their moments in the racing but against the experience of "The Pack" of hardened campaigners lost out a little on the day. Great event, ad great venue.
On the day after I went to Bristol Avon S.C. for the 1st CVRDA Event of their season. Not too many boats but another good day as we had seperate starts during normal club racing. A Moth in light winds at BASC proved to be unbeatable. Must admit that 790 went well and the good luck I had at MWYC continued as I seemed to be picking up most of the shifts and managed to win the first 2 races comforatbaly and be able to pack up and enjoy Race 3 from the Club Veranda.Bumped into Fenella Gass[who was recovering from her **th Birthday Party Bash the night before.Rupert Whelan was also there in an all wood Minisail[and definitely needing more wind]and who will have a Moth at the Whitefriars Open .One other Moth out in the typically mixed bag of interesting boats. Good bunch the CVRDA Clan .... Roger Witts FRAMPTON MOTHS

Merry Crimble to all from the Frampton Fleet. Hope to see as many of you as possible at the Dinghy Show and our Open in March. Not forgetting the first event of next season at Whitefriars for the Training Weekend.
