I'm having my oldest sail cut down for a mini-sail at the moment and had a look at the class rules to see what is needed.
The measurements are on the measurement form so no probs there but the class rules contain this paragraph on markings:
"(c) The emblem for the Mini-Moth sail shall have a second "M", half the size of the main "M", with the centres of both "M"s on the same horizontal line. The small "M" shall be placed to the right on the starboard side of the sail, and to the left on the port side, so that the emblems may be placed back to back, and shall break the circle at its crossing point. (See sail measurement form for sketch)."
There isn't a sketch on the web site so has anyone got a picture of the correct markings and also can anyone advise me as to where to get the correct size "M".
Ta muchly Paul

Hi Paul, Why such drastic action??.... Have you tried one? The Mini Moth sail was really intended for kids, having sailed with one I think you will find it woefully under powered in all but a gale. Why not go for something like the "Slim" cut which I have found to be a great shape giving power without the fight. You can design any size you like as the Class measurements only state a maximum dimension but would certainly recommend sticking to a full height sail. Also the Mini sail doesn't have a recognised PY so no gain there...
But to get back to the question... Graham Pope could do you an 'M' i'm sure. Regards Laura

Regards Laura I'm cutting it down because I'd have to throw it away otherwise - it dates from some time before 1993 but I am a Yorkshireman. I don't know what the slim cut sail measurements are so can't get the sail cut to them and I think I'd rather have a new one anyway (so bringing 4 sails to the nationals?). Mind you if I buy a new slim sail I will have spent more on sails in the last 6 months than the boat originally cost and probably double what it is worth. I only want to use the mini-sail in a gale, it gets blowy up here in the frozen north. My aim this season is to bandit the 2 Wednesday night series in light winds and come for a social outing to the nationals. Also, my wife who hasn't sailed for 20-odd years would like to sail again so at the moment it is the club enterprise (which means I can't sail my streaker or moth) or the moth. I think it would be useful for her to take 784 out with a small sail initially. I'm polishing and tuning the streaker in readiness for some opens this season, so she isn't getting near that! I would just like the sail to be class legal but it isn't clear where the insignia should go or where to get one from. Incidentally, why there needs to be a different marking is beyond me, having a sail that only goes 3/4 of the way up the mast and along the boom should be indication enough that you are flying a mini sail. Rules is rules though. Perhaps the committee could bin the rule requiring the extra markings and solve my problem that way?

Paul Your choice of course but I agree with Laura and suggest either you consider getting hold of a Classic Sail[i.e not full length top Batten],possibly cutting down a full length top Batten Sail to a Classic or Slim type of cut,or splashing out on a new Slim Sail. We have tried the Mini Moth Sail and it does affect the Boat,s handling on a standard set-up. Using a full height sail but with a reduction in sail area from about halfway up does work very well as reported elsewhere on this Forum...see posts on R&J,s "Slim" sail. If you have an R&J Sail that needs the "Slim" treatment give Richard a call at R&J I am sure he will be able to sort you out.
As for the cost of Sails compared with the Boat,s cost... Sails are the principal element of the "engine" afterall. My first boat[not a Moth]cost £25 and a new suit of Sails £50..some time ago. They do wear out and perhaps a lot quicker than most realise so need replacing if it is performance you are after.I think you can bear this out when you first used you "new" North. As I have said many times my advice to anyone who wants to go quicker, given that the Hull is reasonably light/fair and the foils are good,is to ensure you get a good rig[spars and sail] and take time to set-up well. It does not have to be a Carbon Rig with the Sail made from the latest Mylar/Kevlar wondercloths on offer, but a good rig that works and is easily controllable and more importantly you actually know how it works and how to get the best from it.
Suggest that a Moth in a Gale with any size sail is a no-no. As for the wife yes of course a small sail may be useful but with Slim or Classic type sail the boat will handle better. Best to pick a nice evening with light winds to get her back into Sailing. RW

Appreciate all that Roger, thanks.
But I just want to know where the stickers go on the sail and where to get them from. ;D
It's a class requirement that I put them on even though it seems a bit superfluous.
P.S. To give you an idea of how old the sail is, the bag says "Storrar & Bax Sails" on it!

As Laura suggested give Graham Pope a call. The association come to think of it has a Mini-Moth Sail which I think Graham has.Apart from sizes of the actual sail you could ask him to measure the size of the emblem and where it is on the Sail. RW

I've decided that it isn't needed as anything up to a full size sail should be class legal as there is no PY change. Happy to be contradicted
