A long standing "booking" to join the cheery CVRDA[Classic and Vintage Dinghy Racing Association] Bunch was honoured on Saturday at beautiful Shearwater.
Shearwater is on the Longleat Estate[Lord Bath and his Safari Park and all that stuff]Nr Warminster in South West Wiltshire and is a smallish lake almost entirely surrounded by trees.
Laura had planned to take "Tabby"but did not feel up to it so we duly dragged the Yellow Peril 790 down.
Qualification to entrants is that the boat MUST be over 25 years old with rigs as near to original as possible but helms can be any age.
The CVRDA "gang" are really a friendly bunch who needless to say love Classic dinghies and no doubt are veryknowledgeable.Good to meet up with one time Mothist [and still keen on keeping up with whats going on in the Moth world]Rupert Whelan.Mark and Karen Collyer were spectating and no doubt enjoying the Autumn sunshine.
Winds were light and variable,no very variable !
I managed to win all 3 races in perhaps ideal Moth conditions.
Being the second slowest boat there on Handicap[CVRDA Events are run using Classic P.Y.Nos so I was on 107 in "old money" terms was a little daunting against Merlins,Albacores etc but these guys [with the noted exception of Rupert]never managed to really get going in the very tricky conditions.
Not neccessarily due to the overall win on the day the Moth attracted some interest and a couple of admirers being very keen, one in fact definitely wants one.
Good fun...certainly.
Racing is taken seriously in this unique Association that encourages older Boats to participate at a variety of venues.
Next Years CVRDA Nationals are at Whitefriars.....could give it a bash I suppose now that we have two qualifying boats....
790 will be 27 years old next year.
Add the ages together and thats me !...Old Git !
700 will be 35 years old.
I am sure this may attract other qualifying Moths to have a go...
Perhaps we should have a Vintage Wing in the BMBA but not by Boat but by Helm,s age.We need a figurehead someone held in high regard, experienced, smooth talking...are you busy Tim ?
