Hi, can anyone tell me a ballpark figure for the mast rake for a British Moth? I have to confess to not owning a Moth - in fact I own a mystery boat, bought from ebay for £9.99, for which I have very kindly been given a full British Moth rig (sail no 511) The shroud attachment points and aft face of the mast are close to those used for a Moth rig - 8' and 9' respectively, so I'm rigging the boat Moth style but now need to know how much rake I need, and also an idea of how much rig tension is used. Any help gratefully appreciated. pics can be seen here: s255.photobucket.com/albums/hh137/Phantom88_photos/MOGO/

Gotta love eBay Being of a non-scientific persuasion, I put as much tension in the rig as I can pull on the forstay with a few wraps of the bit of string at the bottom, and tweak the rake until I'm happy I can point well enough to annoy the back half of the Solo fleet on an evening like the one we just had. Then if it's still not working I ask Roger (there is a verb that we have for describing just that, but for the sake of decency and for fear of misunderstanding I'll refrain from mentioning it ) Not very helpful I know; I'm sure there are others here better qualified to lend their wisdom that will be happy to do so however. Main reason for responding was to say I really enjoyed your pictures. What a fantasticly fun looking boat you have there. Bill

Mast Rake The classic method of measuring mast rake is to put the boat onto the water (preferably on a calm day). Hang a weight onto the main halyard and measure the offset between the halyard and the rear of the mast at the gooseneck. The start figure is 150mm (6 inches). It is worth placing a spirit level on top of the centreboard case and see if it is level. If not pack the low end and make a note of it. This will allow you to make adjustments on dry land. Above is pasted from Colins post on Centre Boards I think we met at the boat show? I asked you which boat the rig came from. Looks like that floating thing you have will be a handfull with the Moth Rig on!! Sure will be lots of fun though. I would love to see some pics of it on the water once it's up and running. If it does not all work out well maybe you could find a Moth to go with the rig!! Stay safe and good luck with your project New Boy ( Mark but don't tell anyone it's a secret)

Nessa Think you have a Minisail Two versions were available a wooden version[usually built from a Kit..."stitch and glue "construction]and a GRP version[may have been called a Minisail Sprint]. You may be better trying to get a Topper rig that may be able to fit into a hole in the deck that now appears to be covered by the decking and a mast step. Not sure if a Moth rig is the best way to go but have fun ! Rake settings and tension are perhaps not of great concern initially as I would be more worried about keeping the mast secure.Good shroud plate and forestay fixings for example. Go for a reasonably tight set-up as Bill suggests...I use about 150lb tension on average. As for rake try to get the centre of effort of the sail about in line with the center line of the dagger board to start with. The Moth sail is larger than the original Minisail sail. As some Minisails had wings suggest you may need them to hold the boat down !!! Please post some pics when you get the rig and sail up.

Hi,
Thanks for all the tips. I have checked with various sources and know the hull is not that of a minisail, because the boat is only 12'8" and the minisail is longer (I did own one for a bit, a long time ago)
Yes New Boy, I think we did chat at the dinghy show and I shall be doing exactly as you suggest - keep all the rigging etc in case the mystery boat doesn't work out and I can get hold of a moth hull!
More pics when i finally get afloat.

If it's not a mini sail is it a sun fish? someone has just brought one to my club & it looks similar.

Hi Nessa
Sorry to be a few months behind but I wondered if this means 511 is no more? Just interested as it was my first boat.
Regards
Rick
