4th Race in the Moth Series again saw only 4 Moths out. Injuries and sickness,Easter duties, and boat issues reducing the turnout. However the racing was excellent and really good fun. Sunshine with a force 3 that was gusty at first but faded slightly thro the race. Again quick starting Jeremy Higson[861] led at the windward mark closely followed by Graham Pope[881]with Roger Witts[700] and Ian Haywood[871]in close attendance. The front 3 closed up with Jezza picking up a couple of penalty turns at the leeward mark and was relegated to 3rd.Yours truly led in "Tabby" for the next 3 laps enjoying some very close racing with La Pappa, including some epic luffing and tacking duels that resulted in gap between these 2 and the 3rd and 4th boats.Interesting to note how the 35 year old boat and the 5 week old boat performed together !Eventually Graham sneaked by when 700 slowed on a downwind leg and managed to pull out a lead to the finish.X-Moths first win.700 was second with some way back Jeremy Higson holding off Ian Haywood for 3rd place.Great to see Ian really beginning to get to grips with "Scruff" and going much better in stronger breezes. Jeremy also is proving to get quicker and quicker[when he keeps out of trouble !]. The race was significant for Graham in X-Moth in being their first win against the old geezer in the old girl !As for the old girl "Tabitha Twitchit" what an amazing boat in my first race in her. Given strict instructions to look after her "and to be kind"she is unique.A tad overweight[both the boat and the helm !]does not prevent her from being a very quick boat. Very much a "groover"and a reknowned good upwind boat she is indeed a good ,if not one of the best examples, that older boats can be,and are very competitive especially if the ageing helm on this occaision was not caught napping !!! But the day belonged to X-Moth....hail the violin decked beauty from Worcester !

Moth Series Race 5. Wind Force 3-4 from the N.E. shifting with strong gusts. Only 3 entrants due largely to Holidays,Parties and the day after the MWYC Open resulting in the low turnout. Great conditions saw Bill Gribble and yours truly battleing up the beat and for the first lap as we quickly caught up the slower Solo,s. Ben Gribble was putting in a good performance in the very unfamiliar "Gao"- 840 and apart from sailing so well stayed upright in the very tricky conditions. RW slowly pulled away from Wild Bill to win by just under half a lap and managing to overhaul all but 2 of the Solo fleet, with Bill 2nd and Ben 3rd.

Frampton Moth Series Race 6 Volcanic Ash effects,Courses,No Shows and all number of other reasons kept our number of starters down to only 3 again.Welcome appearances of Laura Honey[700] and Tony Latham[756]in the frustratingly light conditions both had a good race with each other with Tony eventually beating Laura. The first round saw Laura close behind Roger Witts[880]at the windward mark but on a day where the wind was so patchy she fell back inn the really light conditions to contest the rest of the race with Tony.Tony had a terrible start but soon caught Laura and was making on the leader to only fall back in a dead patch.Roger Witts was 1st,Tony 2nd and Laura 3rd. In the General H,Cap race that followed Laura excelled. An usual reaching start saw Laura in a good position at the first mark, thereafter she headed the race from mid way through the first lap, ahead of 2 quick Enterprises, the Solos and Lasers and yours truly now in an OK ! Sailing very well she was first boat across the line and comfortably won the race ....her first outright Handicap series race win at Frampton ! Cries of "its Moth conditions" were heard but the truth is Laura sailed so well especially when the wind increased that the faster boats behind could not catch her.A well deserved win. As for the OK Helm a 6th position ! Laura was using the Jim Hunt Kevlar Mainsail for the only the 2nd time to great effect. As for 40 year old "Tabby"...I have said it before but what a boat !!! Subject to overseas travellers getting thro the Volanic Ash clouds and others being available the turnout for the reamaining Moth Series races should be improved.

With race 7 not held Race 8 saw a turnout of 7 boats in the Frampton Moth Spring Series with Guest Andrew Perrott joining in on the fun. Blustery Force 3-4 from the East giving unusually tricky conditions on the 3 beats for all. Guest[who invited him anyway ?]Andrew Perrott in 834 made the start and squeezed[of all the cheek]yours truly hard away from the line in a very Accountant like manouver.Needless to say I ignored him and gave him some and gave him to Tony to play with.At the end of the first beat Dastardly Wild Bill Gribble was in contention as was consistent starter Tony Latham. But it was Tony who tucked into second place at the windward mark with Andrew and Bill embarking on a race long battle.Andrew Parker-Mowbray started steadily and was always in the hunt but did fall back as Laura Honey did.Laura was struggling in the conditions and lost out badly at the start from which she never recovered. Ian Haywood ,back from doing a Ray Mears in the New Forest, had his moments thro the race but did not figure as he would have liked.Tony Latham in contrast to "his worst race ever"last Wednesday evening sailed his boots off and ended up a very strong 3rd.I managed to win and enjoyed making on and progressing through the Solo,s,Lasers who started ahead of us as they flailed in the tricky sections.....ideal Moth hunting ground at Frampton with an Easterly breeze. The final two Class races have yet to come when the minor placings will be decided but Bill looks good for 2nd place overall but as usual there will no doubt be spoilers for him to fend off.Great to see Cheerful Andrew join us from Chippenham for the day. "New" Boat and a "New"Sail all need adjusting to but if anyone can adjust Andrew can and we all know that M.M. can be quick enough to do really well. Come and see us again Andrew..... Final Results.... 1st 880-Roger Witts 2nd 838-Bill Gribble 3rd 796-Tony Latham 4th 834-Andrew Perrott 5th 833-Andrew Parker-Mowbray 6th 871-Ian Haywood 7th 700-Laura Honey

Rae 9 in the Frampers Moth Series saw 5 boats come to the line. Conditions were tricky, very gusty with that now not so unusual North Easterly doing its worst I managed to escape early on from growling Bill Gribble and Jezza Higson but did manage to look back at the right time to see Bill taking a ducking at the windward mark.He righted quickly and was then locked in quite a race for the whole 5 laps with Jezza,Tony Latham and Ian Haywood.2nd place was changing almost on every leg. Mid way thro the race a very heavy shower cleansed the Fleet and thro the murk it was Bill gaining the upper hand for 2nd place. On the long run Tony Latham got past Bill to take a very well deserved second place with Bill 3rd,and Ian Haywood 4th pushing Jeremy back into 5th. Up front I must admit I got a bit lonely up until I caught up the Solo,s and had some fun....again.My winning distance was embarrassing but must admit I seemed to be getting all the luck on one of those days.... Bill Gribble now looks uncatchable in 2nd place overall in the series, but 3rd place could go to Jeremy or Ian.Tony Latham unfortunately can,t qualify but is more than prepared to be the spoiler in the final race on the 23rd May !

I have a gig, but I've told the band that they're packing up on their own, so I should be back in time to make the last of the three races

Race 10,the final race,in the Moth Series was a cracker... Some last minute assistance with Sail setting tips for "Wild Bill" paid dividends as he led for most of the race holding off "New Boy" and a very late challenge from "La Pappa" at the finish only just beating him by a second ! Bill led from the start from New Boy with Jezza in close contention in the 6 boat fleet. Jezza fell back to contest the last 3 places with Tony Latham[who never really got going]and new Moth recruit Andy Doyle in Andrew P-M,s "Merlin".New Boy got very close several times but tenacious Bill hung-on and with his new downwind speed seemed to always have the edge.Another very close race. In the quest for more speed Jezza,s "MOG" got "the treatment" at the break in a two stage plan to re-set up the plastic fantastic. All seemed to work very well with Jeremy leading the General Handicap race for most of the race only to be overataken by a Comet,a couple of Lasers and a Solo. Now with better height and upwind speed Jezza was smiling again ! eventually taking 3rd place in the results.

Great win by Jezza "Banzai" Higson in 861 "Mog" on Wednesday,s Gen Hcap race proving how much better he is going lately and what a quick boat "Mog" can be. He lead for the first part of the race but let "La Pappa" slip by. Eventually he overtook Graham again and held on for a good win from the leading Enterprise and Byte.Tony L was out in the 3rd Moth but was over the line at the start and was mid fleet for most of the race but looked fast.
Latest News 790 - Originally named "Outsider II" joins the Frampton Moth Fleet. A Skinner all wood boat last sailed at Welwyn Garden City and Broxbourne. First appearance in a week or two after some "Rogering "!

Congratulations to Ed Higson for a stunning performance in the Modnite Races at Frampton on 26/06/10.Sailing 861 "Mog" Ed[12 years old...with new haircut!]led and finished both races on a moonlit Frampton Lake to be first boat over the line ...twice ! No need for Handicaps Ed was a clear winner ! The second race being won by an embarrasing distance over one of Framptons quicker Solo,s.Very well done Ed !
In the Frampton Moth Series[curiously named the Autumn Class Series when we are currently mid-Summer]the day after conditions were very different with a Force 3-4 with 5-6 gusts at times.4 Boats came to the line.Laura "Tabby" 700 could be heard screaming all over the lake on some of the hairier reaches until she capsized letting Ian Haywood "Scruff"871 through. The screaming didn,t stop but she managed to pass Ian who was struggling a little in the conditions.Jezza "Mog" 861 was not complaining and was really enjoying the conditions but could not catch yours truly in "Same Same" 880. Finishing order was 880,861,700 and then 871, In a race that will be remebered for blinding reaches. Plucky Ian went out again in the Gen H,cap race ! Mad Fool !

After a mid-season re-varnish and tweak or two "Tabby" was re-launched on Saturday. Laura took a ducking in 700 practising amidst the usual screams and laughter on a wild plane ! Burgee was intact when righted so she was happy. Racing on Sunday saw 3 Moths out in the afternoon[700,790 and 861]. Laura was experimenting with a "small" sail but was first of the 3 at the windward mark in the Pursuit race and headed the Moths for a lap.I managed to slowly eak out a small lead [in 790]over Jezza [in 861]as Laura slipped back slightly.Mid race a special Birthday fly-past for Laura of a Spifire circled the lake with a few gracious turns diverted attention for a couiple of minutes.790 finished 5th and 861 6th in a principally off-wind/reaching course which suited the quicker boats...or at least thats our excuse. The 2nd race[General H,Cap] was a cracker between 861 and 790. 790 lead for 861 for most of the race but with 861 in very close proximity...always! A really great race got even closer when 790 slowed[could have been weed,or old age !..but no excuses]and 861 headed for a while.Positions changed continuously thro the final laps with a lone Firefly joining in on the fun. At the finish Jezza beat 790 by a couple of seconds...ending up 5th and 6th respectively. Great fun and well sailed Jezza
