# 786 Has now gone to a good home. Jeff Haggerty at Broxbourne SC will give her the TLC she needs, and get her back up to fighting fitness. Watch this space.

NOW FREE TO A GOOD HOME.
I am unsure on the hull weight - she is light and quick. She came 13th in the 2011 Nationals (with the worst rig and sail ever!), she has good speed.
Its a real shame I dont have the time to restore her - she is solid and only needs a re-paint and re-varnish to bring her up to scratch.

Jon - I am confused by this ... the post says 786 has gone to Jeff at Broxbourne (I know Jeff is about to start work on her) ... so what's the post on 26th March about ? What is free to a good home ? I know I'm easily confused .... but I think for good reason on this one.

Toby I had agreed to pick up 786 before / at the time of Jon's last posting Yes it was free, but does need a lot of TLC and pennies spending as usual All good fun, keeps me out of the pub! JH

Hi All - Long story but Jeff decided to 'pass' on '786'himself and I eventually picked it up totally for 'free'. The hull has obviously had a very hard life with numberous repairs (some major) ! All was revealed as I stripped it of all coatings. The good thing is even after about 80 hours of stripping back plus further sorting including some key consolidating epoxy and glass repairs the boat is still light.... by the time it has fittings and is repainted it should be almost exactly on minimum weight. The decks are pretty tatty so it is being completely painted as well - but to a high standard. Lastly I thought it needs a much ligher rig !! Now a new carbon stick/boom cannot be justified on this 'wild card' budget winter project ... but I have a badly broken Blaze carbon mast otherwise destined for the skip ... These are longer and the calcs suggest a 'cut and shut' approach can net me a decent enough reconfigured BM length stick and remove the mangled section around the hounds area .... and the boom should be possible out of a discarded R&D Icon tube. Foils ? Bit of a nighmare but I'll worry about that later ... In the short term can anyone advise me on the optimal position of the base base... say measured from the bow ?

Hi Mike, In Colin Hall beginners rig guide, that can be found on the main site, he suggests a starting point of 600 mmm with 200mm of mast rake. Other sailors will, I am sure, post more detailed advice. If your after info, try contacting Colin, Toby Cooper( polyfiller) Graham Pope or Roger Witts or even John Claridge down in lymington. If nobody pipes up on here, message me and I will dig up some phone numbers and email address. Also try the British moth Facebook page, it's quite well used. Anyway welcome to the class, it's great that you want to come and play with our funny little boats. We're a very friendly class and I am sure your get I warm welcome if you fancy doing some opens( dates aren't up yet, but they normally start round about Easter at my club). One things for certain, this forum and the Facebook page are a lot nicer than the y&y forum. Regards Duncan ( exlaser)

Thanks Duncan
It was either an OK or a BM (need for something completely different at the time) but having a written off carbon Blaze mast available that 'might just work' in cut down form on a BM was a key factor ... add the temptation of a freebie hull, despite the mountain of work required, and the decision was easy. Will certainly do the odd meeting or two if there is no clash with other sailing events next year - it will also be good to see some new racing locations as well.
And it is not difficult at all to be a lot nicer than some on-line 'facilities' as you suggest ! When / where are your Nationals next year ?
Mike

Mike
I am at Maidenhead SC, just down the road from you where we have 5 Moths on the water. If you want to come down and have a look at some of the boats email me via the website.
I can help out if you wish as well for rigging etc.
The latest edition of the Class Newsletter will be ciculated to BMBA members this weekend. For rig set up if you go to "Technical" page on the website you will find all the links regarding setup etc.

Think the nationals are at northampton next year and normally the second week in August. The only open date I am reasonably sure of is the one at my club( mid warwickshire yacht club) which is on the 2nd of April. If your boat is ready by then, I can promise you a friendly welcome, free beer( I am the bar manager) and a sailing experience like no other . Google earth the club

Hi Mike, we have had the class newsletter which contained a provisional open list. This will be firmed up soonish and posted on the website in due course. But it does confirm the nationals will be at Northampton sailing club from the 10th to the 13th of August. Also confirmed is the moths annual trip/open/sea champs/holiday to the seaside at Fowey from 28/5/16 to 3/6/16. Elaine and I have never been, but everyone that's done it says what a great event it is and how much fun they have had. Hope this info helps. I have contacted our class yoda, (Toby Cooper) on your behalf, so if you need any boat set up info, feel free to contact him, probably facebook is the easiest method. There isn't anything about moth sailing that he doesnt know. Think one of his many championship wins was in a Skinner boat like your.
