The Farewell Fizz was an after National race. Seven Moths joined in with the handicap race at Staunton Harold on Saturday afternoon to show off our boats to the locals and raise the profile of the class. We were made very welcome.
As extra incentive to put a little effort in after a hard weeks sailing, prizes were on offer for the first Moth around the windward mark and for the first 3 Moth finishers. Joining 14 local boats of various types we made the handicap fleet swell to 21.
The promise of a prize for quickest to the windward mark did the trick and the start was fair but hard. Latham and Wiltshire aimed to start from the centre of the line with Latham trying to push Wiltshire over. The rest of the Moths got away well from the start boat end. It was a long beat and the places changed several times. Deacon split from the fleet early and headed towards the club house bank while the rest had a tacking battle up the middle. Deacon got a great lift on the last quarter of the beat to sneak ahead of Wiltshire to take the first prize on offer. He was not shy in showing his pleasure. the Moths on mass were well up the fleet in rounding the first mark only beaten by a Solo. Deacon was quickly caught and after a so so start Keefe caught up with the leading boats. Just Panic decided it was time to join in too. At the bottom of the long run Tomkins who had swopped boats and was now sailing Lapwing, appeared and challenged on the mark. The shorter version of the rest of the race is that we all had lots of fun and were more than noticed by the local club members. Latham went on to win with Keefe and Wiltshire taking 2nd and 3rd and Panic just a boat length behind. Tomkins took a pit stop while in contention so dropped to the rear of the fleet. Freely still with a big smile on her face from going so well in her new boat during the nationals sailed around enjoying the sun and having a chilled out time.
The positions of the Moths in the handicap fleet was pleasing with us taking 4th 5th 6th and 7th places. The fleet included Solo, Comet, laser2000, mirror, enterprise, musto skif, handicap18, rs feva and our Moths. the wind was such that we had to hike so if think we all did very well.
Thanks to those who stayed on and I hope you all enjoyed a good Farewell Fizz. Thanks also to the race officer for sorting us out with a printed copy of the results.
