Hi everyone, The busy prep for the sailing season continues...
My old Needlespar mast has non adjustable spreaders which limits the "tunability" of the rig, and I was thinking about replacing the spreaders with adjustable ones. But wondered if anyone could advise what sort of range of length I need?
Cheers

Hi Toby
Issue will be the spreader bracket itself... As the Needlespar is so skinny other brackets [Supersapr and Selden] are for larger dia Mast sections so will need to be adapted. It can be done ...just cut the bracket in half and secure to the mast and then you are off. May be able to help with a Selden Bracket and Spreaders that would do the trick. The Selden Bracket has a range of possible positions to stiffen up the "pole".The Bracket will squeeze down to approx 60-65 mm diameter so you would have to use some packers between it and the mast if you did not want to cut it.Selden Pt No 522-144 for ref.
There is another way to stiffen the Mast... You could engineer and make a "Prodder"...you have several examples at Medley in fact you could copy. All you would need is a simple Bracket fixed to the Mast and to pivot the Prodder off of it. Prodders in fact limit the bend and seem to work well even though they look a little "different". If you would rather go in this direction may be worth your while having a chat to John Claridge to see if he can help...I am sure he would.

Very interested in the use of the prodder, will it be adjustable? Is there a standard fitting to attach to forestay? Let us know how you get on. Jeff H

No Way I am an expert on Prodders....you need to speak to Mr Prodder himself John Claridge on the finer points of prodding ! However some basics.... - to my knowledge there is not a standard prodder available. - likewise there is no standard bracket or fixing to the forstay. - adjustable ?...could be but believe most are fixed. - The Prodder on "Blue One" currently on loan to me has arms that are adjustable but are locked off. - The Selden Mast to be fitted to 885 will have a single adjustable Forestay Prodder [not a fully "pivoting" A la Claridge" version] RW

I can advise on how the prodders work and can help suggest how to retro fit. I also did the fitting of Selden adjustables to Wein..... IIRC I bought the 450mm length kit and cut them down. I used spacers and some brute force bending to avoid the need to cut the stainless bracket.
