So I've finally started the renovation of "When" and have found some veneer cracks and the start of some delamination in the side decks. What I am thinking of doing is laying some carbon sheet on the deck and rolling on epoxy. Would this be within the class rules ?
when the same problem occurred with Wein, JC put an extra 1.5 mm veneer over the cracks. What I am thinking is carbon mat will be easier for me to apply for a good repair and won't add so much height to the deck surface.
Also having a hellish time stripping varnish off the decks .... There is a mix of one pack (easy), two pack (harder) and ultravar (nightmare).... And also on the side and rear decks the must be epoxy coat. Some of the paint stripper I've put on in places has just sat there and smiled at me ...... No reaction at all........ Am beginning to remember how much I hate paint stripping ;-)

Will leave it for the Technical Team to advise but to mind and interpretation of the rules the use of Carbon [ mat/weave or otherwise ] is not permitted. GRP,Wood or even Al Alloy but Carbon is not listed. Carbon is allowed for spars but not anywhere else. The repair you are referring to could be undertaken by using a Glass mat/weave and resined in place to achieve what you are after. I believe that Carbon materials should not be allowed in the construction of the Hull and Foils. RW

Toby, had same problem with 713, so I have popped the decks off and redecking. Also gives me a chance to stiffen up mast strut etc. Also putting in double floor ( absolute nightmare getting the old part double floor off ) Should stiffen her up ! any thoughts ,advice and guidance on additional strengthening whilst decks off would be appreciated. Also there's some waste timber that I can remove to try to get the weight down. Decking starts this Sat, so shouldn't take too long. JH

As far as I am aware Carbon is not allowed in the hulls or foils. If you want some glass fabric let me know I can help as I am in the reinforcement business.. www.formax.co.uk Graham is the best man to discuss this with.. Chairman Rob 881 X-Moth

The alternative to glass-fiber matting or Carbon is nylon matting. Very much lighter than glass-fiber, easier to use and can be shaped with your partners scissors without them knowing as it leaves no trace around the house! This can be epoxied on. It is very strong and will stiffen up any part of the boat.
If you would like a sample PM your address and I will send you a little bit so you know what to look for.
