I discovered that my pots of epoxy had fallen over and leaked inside the cockpit. My first thought was "arrrggh! what a waste."
More seriously, does it need to be cleaned off with anything special before varnishing? or is just a simple mopping up sufficient?

You will need to clean up as much as you can. It may be advisable to use some solvent to thin down and wipe a way the worst. I am pretty sure varnish wont set properly unless the spill is cleaned as much as you can. Have a word with Graham at Severn Sailboats or any other boat builder to get further advice.

I suppose the other option could be to clean it up then wipe down with the hardener that didn't leak ...

You will not need much hardener as the ratio is likely to be around 5pts resin to 1 of hardener. Once cured ( I would advise a few days) sand it down and then varnish over the top. Yous hould then get a good albeit an uneven finish (you will see a different colour to the wood)

In the end I bought some of the West cleaner solution and cleaned it off. It's fairly pungent stuff and eats through vinyl gloves. I suspect that it doesn't do the varnish underneath a lot of good but that's due to be redone anyway.
