SESCA Open 24th April 2010
Emerging from my Camper on Saturday morning to find the sun shining a light breeze and the smell of bacon cooking put a smile in my face. The home clubs plan to ply us with copious amounts of wine at the Friday night candle light B.B.Q had work as my head was a little fuzzy.
Race 1
Witts made a good start (for him) and broke free from the fleet Lupton Wiltshire and Keefe slowed each other up the first beat while trying to be second around the windward mark. The chasing pack behind swopped places on every lap and all finished very close together. Witts 1st by some margin 2nd Wiltshire with Lupton in 3rd on his heels.
Race 2
Lupton used his knowledge of home waters to take full advantage of a bad start from Witts. Lupton opened up a large lead over the rest. Sergeant Freeley and Wiltshire had a early battle which Freeley the only female in the race was leading until problems with her tiller caused a capsize. Wiltshire and Sergeant had a race long battle slowing enough to be caught by Witts who had worked back through the fleet and nearly catching Lupton but then dropping back at a wind shadowed mark which saw Lupton break clear once again to take a well earned 1st with Witts 2nd . Sergeant got away from Wiltshire who was then caught by Keefe and overtaken at the last but one mark. A drag race to the finish line ensued which Wiltshire won to take 4th by a Bow.
Race 3
Stronger wins Brought Hall into the action. Sergeant was leading for most of the 1st lap with Witts hunting him down in 2nd. Hall and Wiltshire had a close race with Hall coming off best and taking 3rd. Further back Lupton was struggling but having a close race for 5th 6th 7th and 8th who all finished within a minute of each other.
Really good days close racing with never more than a few minutes covering the fleet. This is a must have Open for 2011. Make the trip next year it is a great event on and off the water!
