ADVICE PLEASE ! I RETURNED TO DINGHY SAILING LAST YEAR IN A STREAKER, DON'T LIKE THE DAGGER BOARD, IT DOES NOT LIKE MY 13.5 STONE, AND IT KILLED MY KNEES IN LIGHT AIRS. WHATS THE MOTH LIKE ON THE KNEES, AND CARRYING 13.5 STONE ? I SAIL AT BROXBOURNE SO ITS PREDOMINANTLY SHIFTY LIGHT STUFF. THE PHANTOM AND LASER WERE ALSO KNEE BREAKERS I WAS INTERESTED IN 814 IF ITS STILL FOR SALE?

I changed to a Moth this year after sailing a Laser for 20 odd years, I'm not as heavy as you but must admit the Moth is much better on knees, back, ankles etc. Really enjoying sailing again after being in the doldrums for several years!

I would suggest you have a go in one before you commit. Not that you wouldn't anyway Compared to a laser, a British moth is much kinder on the knees. Much deeper cockpit. But it's still a single-hander, with slightly less freeboard and somewhat less room than you'd find in a Solo. But in light, shifty airs they do excel. And at thirteen and a half stone, whilst you weigh somewhat more than me, you don't weigh as much as some of the mothists I spend my weekends chasing around the lake here at Frampton. I would warmly recomend finding a boat and having a go. But be warned, if you do discover you happen to have an affinity for their albeit somewhat perculiar charm, they can be rather addictive

Jeff; if you can't find a boat I could always build you one. (when I've finished rebuilding Hamlet 3175-the next project, that is. Remember that boat?). The only Moth in our house these days is 760 Paranoid, but she does'nt get out much. Still see Jacko sometimes but Ive given up on the dancing. Drop us a mail to catch up. Goffo

Hi there.
814 is still for sale and just up the road from you at Stansted Abbots. So not far to travel if you want to try one out before you buy.
Bob.

I'm now down to under 15 stone (from 16.5 at its worst) and aiming for 13 again and having not sailed for some years am regularly beating about half the fleet of streakers at Ripon.
I have the others in my sights too! Might get them if I lose another 2 stone for next season!
When I joined at the start of this season the streaker fleet were trying to recruit me, now there is quite some interest in my moth.
In a light wind I have everyone worried, recently beat all the RS200's, lasers, streakers etc etc for a 5th place (on handicap) in one of the Regatta races. Only got beat by some Enterprises.
Would recommend a moth to anyone.

Sounds like you are having fun. I am around ...... Stone too and taking a stone off makes a lot of differance. Well done with the weight loss too. New Boy Are you going to the Nationals?

I'm not surprised that you beat all the streakers I usually beat the only one at my club I also haven't been beaten by a Comet yet.

The difficulty in losing weight is fitting the right amount of beer into my diet. I'm not coming to the Nationals this year as I don't think I've had enough time on the water yet. Just got back into it really and only ever made the numbers up when I used to turn up. Cheers Paul

I only beat half of them, the others I only get close to in a light wind. There are about 20 of which around 8 sail regularly, some good sailors too. I don't think one is a large enough sample ;D

There is such a mixture of ability there it will not be a problem. Its quite a layed back affair as Nationals go. You would meet lots of great people and get a chance to check out boat set ups. From what I can tell from my yo yo weight 13.5 to 14 stone works very well in my Moth in both light and strong winds 15 stone is great in a blow and Bill at about 6 stone when wet which he often is has the advantage in the lighter stuff. So its down to the weather as always and something for everyone. Every dog has his day as they say. Hoping for a windy nationals to do well but also hope w get a mixture so we see differnt people at the front of each race. New Boy

And I have to maintain a strict diet of copious amounts of beer in order to maintain my 6 stone ;D I hate the light stuff because it's boring and uncomfortable, but New Boy is right; his extra ballast definately gives him the advantage (at least on the beat) when the winds pick up. He demonstrated it on the bank holiday Monday at Fowey and again in our Club handicap on Sunday, though in the case of the latter the breeze picked up too late in the race to save him

Good to see more potential Mothists! To those who may have wondered what has happened to me this year I am on the move to Stoke on Trent We move tomorrow and Jubilate has made her last trip from Upton Warren. I aim to join Nantwich and Border Counties SC. No Moths there as yet but I hope to persade them! As a result of the move no Open Meetings this year but hope to restart in 2010 if I can manage the journey! Happy sailing to all Mothists everywhere David Taylor 859 "Jubilate"

David Good to hear from you, thought that you were keeping a low profile this year. Please to see that we are expanding the bounderies for the British Moth. It will be interesting to hear the comments from the members of your new club eventually Trust the move goes well for you I assume this will result in our not being able to compete against each other at this years Nationals Ian E
