Hi all
After finding that the boat I was renovating is beyond economic repair (already removed deck, transom, 2 bulkheads and centreboard case) have now found that floor is rotten. I have decided to build a new Moth from scratch (or plans).
I would love to build a hull from a kit or buy one ready-built but have to work to a budget.
I already have a full rig rudder, enough ply for a total redeck transom bulkheads cockpit sides centreboard case gunnels and other sundry bits. All I need is the ply for the hull and some pretty paint.
I have a couple of Questions
Do plans exist? If so, how do I get hold of a copy and how much do they cost?
Or would it be better/easier to build a frame using the measurements for each station minus the thickness of ply from the measurement form and then cladding with ply?
Final question What is the cost of the registration a new moth once completed? Hope you are able to help. There will probably be more questions as the build goes on
Cheers Graham Nelson

Graham Kits do not readily exist but if you contact Graham Pope-Severn Sailboats or Godfrey Clark I am sure either of these two gents will help if you want to consider a kit or possibly part-built boat. Incidentally there are some rather fine craft for sale on the BMBA web-site that are not expensive. As for Plans yes they do exist...contact the Secretary Abby Freeley for more info. Also ask her about costs of same and registration costs. If you opt to re-skin the little devil then you are in a fairly unique position in that you may have the chance to reduce some hull weight[if the boat is elderly] and by using new or modified Bulkheads achieve a "modern"hull shape to Ian Howletts updated Hull Lines. On this subject you need to speak to others who have done the same. There is actually a fine re-built Moth at Medley[343]...saw her on Saturday 20th Sept that looks wonderful and is nearing completion....the owner may be able to help if this is the direction you want to go in.Sorry do not know the owner but someone from Medley will I am sure offer help and words of wisdom. Good Luck Roger Witts

Hi Graham I currently Have a boat 75% built my 4th andcan provide a copy of the plans and tweaks to get a fast hull Shape, you will need 3 sheets of good 5mm ply ,Robbins Elite is best ,and lightweight panels, they have a good web site and will deliver small quantities. Put the boat together with epoxy fillets and coat inside and out with epoxy for long life and strength. A straight forward boat to build but take care on initial set up of frames. If you are passing or local to Worcester pop in,contact deatails on BMBA web site. Regards Graham Pope Severn Sailboats

Hi Graham - I would be delighted to take you up on your invitation, thank you very much. I will telephone at some point tomorrow with a view to organising this.
Hi also to Roger, and many thanks for your reply and advice. I appreciate the options you have shown me - the reasons I have for opting to building a moth from scratch rather than buying one are as follows:
I already have most of what I need for the build
I am cash short, time rich at present
I relish a challenge! :-)
The moth I already have is a meritlock hull - these were built with no frames but were slot and tab construction. If I were to remove the floor, unfortunately all I would be left with is the side panels and inner side tanks, with nothing holding them together. Not a good idea!
I have successfully redecked a solo and 2 streakers (including putting in false floors) so do not feel too daunted and am willing to give this build a really good go. Feeling quite hopeful it will go well! :-)
Many thanks again to all those who replied,
Graham Nelson
