Hi, I have just about finished the rebuild of 713's hull and I am starting to look at the refitting of the fittings but would like to take the oportunity to modernise. Is there any place on the web site I can see photos or get info on the subject. The areas that I am particulary interested in is converting to centre main sheeting and the kicker/outhaul/down haul
Thanks Neil

Hi Neil We will do our best to help you...bear with us as we sort out some photos... Would be helpful if you could advise us of 713,s layout..perhaps a few pics of the cockpit layout and what control line set-up you have at the moment. Let us see this rebuilt beast ! Center Main set-ups vary from Boat to Boat and depend on the layout. Likewise the contol line set-ups depend on what you have around the mast step area and bottom of the mast...a pic of this area would certainly help. The web site does not have any specific information on this sort of detail but some of the photographs in the Gallery section may help. Roger Witts Frampton Moths

Thanks Roger
Unfortunatly I have stripped the boat so can not take photos of how it was. At the foot of the mast it had the normal type of RWO foot with onlt 2 pullies fitted to it. On the deck at the trailing edge it had 2 cleats each side. The main was rear sheeted although the sheet lead from the transon along the boom to a pully attached too a short rope loop from the c/b case. But as all this has been removed and the decks not yet varnished I am in a position to fit out as best practise.
I have now seen the photos of Scruff (?) 871 and have got some good ideas for the mast foot and deck control areas but would still like to see some other ideas and for the main sheet and shroud base area if possible
Once completed I will send some photos
Thanks Neil

Neil we will take pics of a couple of layouts this weekend and send to you. Seems like the Centre-Main sheet sytem you have is a la Laser style. Most common options are... Long foredeck boats[Clark boats for example].... a strop just aft of the bulkhead where a Block with Becket is fixed and then the final block[usually a ratchet]is mounted on top of the centreboard case capping. Short foredeck boats or more open cockpit boats....a short loop on top of the centerboard case to postion both blocks can work well.Alternatively brackets can be built up either side of the casing[to clear the centreboard]to provide a platform to secure the blocks. Suggest whatever you do to keep it simple and make sure all the lines and blocks etc line-up and work well.Sounds obvious I know but you would be amazed at how many boats are badly set-up in this respect. The mast step area can become very cluttered with perhaps 3 or even 4 control lines per side. Using triple blocks secured to the mast step is a usual and often used method to keep things neat provided they line up well.Probably a good idea to avoid screwing any blocks/dead eyes to the deck itself...securing to the mast step will be stronger, but make sure that the mast step is well screwed or bolted down. A cascade type Kicker is simple to make and very efficient and avoids using yards of control line.No need to use st steel rigging wire just good quality non-strech or pre-streched line will be fine.Suggest you use any of the superb lightweight blocks available from Ronstan,Holt,Selden or Harken. If the budget allows go for Ball Bearing blocks and would suggest that 20mm sheaves would be adequate. Thanks for the info so far and look forward to the photos.
My Moth is a short deck type so is there an accepted measurement for the pully mounting position assuming I am going for the strop fixed across from both side tanks.

NEIL...We have taken some pics of 4 or 5 different boats/layouts but need your e-mail to send them. There are no set or accepted measurements to position control line or center main Pulleys/Blocks.Some builders use and have used perhaps standard layouts/set-ups but these are not recorded as dimensions to my knowledge. The pics will hopefully help you with some detail on positioning and layout for control lines and likewise for the Centre-Main Strop. The positioning of the Strop needs to be as near central as you can get along the boom WITHOUT getting in the way of the normal sitting/trim position.Suspect you will find that this will end up being a compromise as the Strop will probably end up closer to the Gooseneck rather than being centered. It may be beneficial to tie things on and see how things look and work first before you start drilling holes !

Neil Seems you can,t view the pics we have sent... Have had a word with Bill[Webmaster]about putting them on here somewhere. Will need to run this past the Committee for their support. We gets lots of questions all year about layouts and the best way to do things etc...so the need to advise and help people is very apparent in this respect. Some good work has been done in the past by Godfrey Clark and no doubt others too in publishing guidelines for set-ups etc.Perhaps in the meantime you could contact Abby Freeley to ask if she can send past Handbooks to you. Give us a little time to get the committee,s blessing etc and thoughts but we will get the pics and some descriptions etc for you [and others]to view. Where do you sail ? If you are within range why not try to visit a local club where Moths are sailed. You are always welcome to visit us at Tropical Frampton...just call and you would be made very welcome.
