With some reluctance I'm selling my British Moth that I've owned for the last 25 years; BM784.
It has had a number of refurbishments over the years, the last one in 2011/2012. At the nationals in 2011 I noticed the hull was creaking and flexing and subsequently found that serious repairs or a bonfire were the only alternative. Long story short: I cut out all the damaged wood from the cockpit, double skinned the cockpit and repaired the damaged sections of the hull. Details are on my blog, they start here and the rest can be found by clicking the tag hull repair or the category repairs. link
The result was that the boat was saved, was much stiffer and seemed faster, it wasn't much heavier either as I removed all the cork on the cockpit floor and found it weighed 1.5kg! I added a new R&J dacron sail, replaced the whippy original mast with a stiff M7, put a lighter boom on it, replaced the centreboard and rudder with brand new ones made by John Claridge. I also put it on a decent new trailer. 2012 was expensive!
I usually only sail it in light winds at the club on Wednesday evenings as I also own a Streaker. In 2011 I won the club frostbite series in 784, in 2012 it showed it was still competitive at the nationals coming 16th overall out of 40 with a best finish of 8th, in 2013 I won my club handicap championship in 784 and still give faster classes a run for their money in the right conditions. I sailed it at this years nationals, despite my failing health, and gave quite a few much newer boats a run for their money. Sailed in the club frostbite series the other week and had 2 x 3rd places in a pretty competitive fleet of mainly solos and streakers.
The details:
BM784 built 1983 by Brian Skinner(owned by me since 1992, 2 owners from new)
M7 mast
? boom
Claridge foils (new in 2012)
All controls work well (see pictures for details)
Hull sprayed with 2-pack polyurethane by Butler Boats in 2012.
Deck, cockpit etc were taken back to bare wood and had a full west systems treatment, finished with 2-pack varnish in 2012.
The side decks are probably going to need stripping and varnishing sometime next season.
R&J dacron sail cut for the M7 mast in 2012, still very crisp as I also used a second hand North for club racing.
I'm looking for £800 for the boat (the foils cost £500!) and can supply it either on a folding launching trolley (included) or on the combi trailer which was supplied new in 2012 by Butler Boats (add £450).
Located at Ripon SC (or possibly a garage in York)
