With the nationals in a few weeks I thought I would take a look at the runners and riders for the 2012 Nationals as this year see's one of the most competitive fleets in recent times all wanting to get their hands on the Brent Cup in the class's 80th year!
Robbie Claridge 2011 Champion - We've not seen 2011 Champ on the circuit all year as he has been busy with other commitments but Dad John has been busy launching the new deep cockpit boats which seem to be going well based on the same hull shape as the boat Robbie used last year. Using a Claridge Carbon Mast, Robbie will no doubt be quick again especially if it blows, will not want to give up his title easily. What boat will he choose to sail? the Blue one or The Pink one??
Roger Witts 2010- Just launched his new Clardige all GRP boat, Roger's boats are always perfectly set up and on the pace. Using a Selen Carbon Mast with a North Sail he will be right up the front and is probably one of the hardest people to get past once he has the lead in a race, would love to win a second title..
Tim Davidson 2000, 2005, 2008, 2009 Champion - Tim is sailing Proper Job a Godfrey Clark built boat using a SuperSpars M1 Alloy mast, Carbon boom with a Rowsell Sail. Tim has been campagining his solo this season so will be tactically on the pace, always at the front of the fleet so hoping for his 5th Title!
Colin Hall 2003 Champion - Colin has been suffering from gear failure early on in the season but hoping all the gremlins will be now sorted, using a BMBA / Thresher Hull, Aardvark Mast and P&B sail, Colin is probably one of the quickest guys downwind in a blow.
Rob Wilder 2006 & 2007 Champion - Chairman Rob is sailing the X-Moth built by Severn Sailboats's Graham "Papa" Pope using a Superspars M1 Alloy mast, Carbon boom and new Dynamic Sail. The bridesmaid last year to young Robbie, Rob has won 4 opens this season and is going very quickly upwind, desperate to win a 3rd title.
Toby Cooper 1984-1996 Champion- 12 times winner of the Brent Cup.. Toby is back ! In the resotred "When" sister ship to the famous "Wein" in which he won so many titles, built by John Claridge, using a Claridge Carbon Mast and p&B sail, Toby is hoping he has not lost the magic touch on how to make a British Moth go quickly! Early form has shown that he is on the pace already!
Godfrey Clark 2001-2002 Champion - Goffo has been away from the class for a while sailing Solo's, rumours are he is coming to the champs in Paranoid a boat built by himself.. Claire is away measuring at the Olympics in Weymouth so he will be lonely at home and could come and upset a few people as will no doubt be on the pace.. Lets hope he shows up!
This is just the list of ex national champions who will be at the nationals.. Plenty of other runners and riders who haven't had their hands on the famous brent cup who are easily capable of putting a good series together and joining the list of champions as above. I'm sure we will see a few new faces at the front in a few weeks time.
Of course its not just about the front of the fleet we want to see as many boats as possible and it would be great to get into the 50 boat club !
The racing is close throughout the fleet so your guaranteed close racing whatever level you are!!
