Fowey delivered more than just an Open. For some it was a long weekend with several planned events on and off the water and for others it turned into a full weeks holiday shared with friends.
With the Open proper not starting until Sunday 6 travelers took advantage of the offer to crew in the locally built Troys. The wind was such that these very over powered boats were at their limits. A prize was given for the 1st Troy over the line carrying a Mothist and the honours went to Bill and like the rest of us despite the rain could not stop smiling.
All the travelers met up for an evening meal along with our hosts from Gallants Sailing Club who could not do enough to make us feel welcome and help us out.
Sunday Moth Open 1
Race 1
Boats launched and ready to go the 1st race was a short beat followed by a transverse down the Estuary from Penmarlem to Fowey Harbor. With difficult conditions Roger got the best start and rounded the windward mark 1st and headed on his way opening up a large lead which he held to the end. Graham and Martin had a close race with martin taking 2nd Further back mark trailed but got a good run into the line stealing 2 places to take 4th.
Race 2
Now in the Harbor under the watching eye of a large crowd Mark had a good start then went backwards for the rest of the race. Roger showed his skill in shifting winds to once again win with the newcomer Martin in his refurbished yet un tried Moth showing he was not out of the running picking up another 2nd. Young Ben was doing his best to stay in contact but dropped back to Finlay finish in 5th.
Race 3
Mark and Bill trying hard for a good start were caught out by the tide and both over the line. Bill made an amazing recovery to get back into A very close race with 4 boats all pushing each other right to the finish. Martin 1st with Bill sailing his socks off (they were soggy anyway after an earlier swim) and getting into 2nd on the last leg. Roger and Graham followed and the 4 boats all finished within 45 seconds of each other.
Race 4
With all to play for and the race being held in the mouth of the estuary the start saw martin and Roger hit the front once again. The rest of the field dropped away as the front pair were racing for the overall Open win. Martin took the gun for a well deserved victory in his 1st Open in his rebuilt Moth.
1st Martin
2nd Roger
While we had been enjoying some great sailing some of the other travelers had been enjoying themselves while out in Kayak's a skiff and a Wonderer.
After lunch and a few drinks at the Sailing club 3 Moths belonging to Martin Bill and Mark sailed out of the harbor for a play. After venturing way to far off shore they took advantage of the calm gently swelling sea and a stiff wind that had picked up.
Back in the harbor two local youths had been Lent Moths to try out and were having great fun blasting around. The youths Joe and ? were invite to join in a fun race back up the river to Penmarlem.
It was a very close race with positions swapping between Joe Mark and ? with Bill and Ben not far behind. Mark won only taking the lead back 50yrds from the finish with Joe finishing second.
The day not over a party was held at the rented Cottage. Bill entertaining with his great singing voice. Wendy put on a fantastic spread and Mark burnt things on the BBQ.
Monday Open 2
Race 1
Races were held at Penmarlem with a good wind and different conditions to deal with. A long beat which took us around a bend was very challenging. Roger dominated and Martin looked on form again to take 2nd. Young Ben showed he meant business with a great sail to take 3rd.
Race 2
Mark frustrated by some bad decision making in the 1st race was trying hard to get a better result. 5th around the top mark he took a strange line up the outside of the bend in the river but in better wind to come back into 2nd place close behind Roger. Ben who I think had also given himself a talking to was right on his stern and trying to take 2nd over the line but not quite making it.
Race 3
A very close race with Roger once again leading. The others all swapped places several times. Ben was just in front of Bill and mark on the last lap. Mark past Bill but Ben was having none of it and luffed Mark very hard until there was no chance of a pass.
Race 4
A race down river to the harbor in a much stronger winds saw Roger and Mark swop places twice. This was a very long beat only race which was great fun. Mark took advantage of a good lift to open a lead but Roger wanted the clean sweep and took the lead just before the line.
1st Roger
2nd Mark
The prize giving was at Gallants Sailing club who hosted the whole event. Many thanks go to John and his crew for there help and to everyone who offered a ride in their Troys on the Saturday. Special thanks also go to Gorgia and Bambi for some unusual flag flying and OOD help. I am Thinking John may remember this weekend foe some time.
A pasty lunch followed before a leisurely sail back up River.
Once again the non racers were having fun on the water too paddling many miles.
As I said this was more than just an Open with friends sharing lots of fun and of course a few local ales and Ciders.
Thanks also to our Sponsor for the weekend St Austell Brewery
