SESCA British Moth Open - April 25th 2010
Day 2 of SESCA,s Double Header British Moth Open started with zero wind and light rain..
A very un-enthusiastic Moth Fleet took refuge in the Clubhouse until OOD -Ted Deacon threatened that the show must go on which immediately prompted the first breath of a breeze to fill in from the South.
Race 1
Electing for a short course proceedings got under way as the breeze increased and the sun came out.
Mark Wiltshire [872] and Steve Seargeant [865] headed the at the first mark but were caught by the pack on the downwind leg as the wind filled in astern. At the 2nd mark Roger Witts [880] capitalised and took the lead followed by Colin Hall[ 856],Richard Keefe [817] and Tim Lupton [818] from the home Club. These 4 broke clear leaving the early leaders way behind with Wiltshire slipping back down the field with his bailer stuck open and taking on water, he never recovered. Keefe overhauled Hall on the beat with Gary Tomkin [862] catching and slipping past the junior Lupton. At the front Witts increased his lead eventually lapping the less fortunate to take the win with Keefe a well deserved 2nd,Hall 3rd and Tompkin 4th.
Race 2
After a short break and the wind freshening the Moths enjoyed some of the most challenging but ideal conditions seen so far in this seasons Opens. In an eventful race Wiits and Keefe both made great starts with Keefe leading by a whisker at the windward mark. On the long reach the pack caught and bunched up with the leaders at the gybe mark. Super Lightweight Lupton took the inside line and rounded first ahead of Seargeant. With the Fleet planing down to the leeward mark Keefe capsized as Seargeant slipped inside Lupton to take the lead. Witts after being squeezed out at the gybe mark pulled through on the beat behind Seargeant with Wiltshire 3rd at the end of the 1st lap. Witts slowly wore down Seargeant and eventually overtook him and maintained a slight advantage till the end. Hall [using a borrowed sail from Roger Witts] was going better to overhaul Wiltshire to finish 3rd. Colin Hall is still developing an interesting Alloy/Carbon rig and was having a patchy weekend by his standards. .
Race 3
Major course changes ensured longer beats for the 3rd race. By now the wind although still shifty had increased to about Force 3.
Witts made the start and led at the 1st mark with Wiltshire,Keefe and Hall close behind. On the downwind leg Witts was relegated to 3rd as Wiltshire and Keefe moved into 1st and 2 nd positions. Seargeant,ever-present at the front, also gained ground at the conclusion of the 1st lap up to 4th. Wiltshire led for a lap but was overhauled by Witts and Seargeant on the beat to end lap 2.
Witts extended his lead to take his 3rd bullet of the day with Seargeant 2nd. Wiltshire mistook the finish mark on the final leg which allowed Keefe to take 3rd,pushing Wiltshire back to 4th.
Witts in a Claridge built composite Moth used an all Carbon[Selden/Claridge rig]with the new North Technora development sail.
Seargeant BMBA Hulled composite boat had a Superspar rig with P&B Laminate Sail.
Wiltshire in an all wood Claridge boat an all Superspar Carbon rig with Rowsell Laminate Sail.
