This is a fundamental rule change and should not be done by an EGM to which too many members will be unable to attend. It should be done in such a way that all members can vote, perhaps with a pros and cons argument and postal vote sent to all?
I would suggest that the subject be 'put on hold' again, as it was last time (proposed by yours truly 8 years ago), until such a time that carbon spars are not significantly more expensive than aluminium.
This is for two reasons.
1, Current cost differences make it impractical for all bar a minority of the fleet to convert.
2, A general vote could result in carbon spars being outlawed. Imagine if that had happened when the wood/ ally situation was the same as the ally/ carbon one today!

Hello Tim and All I will confirm that the Vote on the rule change 9a Spars will go ahead at and E.G.M at Frampton on severn and that the notice for this will be sent out shortly. The people that were at the A.G.M have agreed that this is the way to move forward on this as a vote there was not possible. For those people not present a large majority at the meeting were in favour of the rule change to allow the Spars to be made from any material not just Carbon. This would give choice to everyone and save problems in the future as new materials become cheaper and available. As has been said many times over, there has been no performance gain seen from the Carbon Mast just and ease of handling on and off the water. Looking around the boat park at Hunts there was a variety of different masts being used all with differing weights and bend characteristics. There is no weight limit on masts and they are not one design as I have just explained. I am simply trying to offer more choice to everyone, encourage new people into the class, Gain much needed publicity and move the class forward as I feel standing still is moving back wards against other classes. Hello All, although I souldn't have a say here, as I am not (yet) an association member, I would urge caution when allowing carbon masts. Experience in the OK class shows that unless you get the wording of the rules right, with regard to minimum weight and types of carbon allowed, manufacturers will start an arms race with high tech building methods (filament winding) and higher modulus carbon fibres to produce lighter, faster, (and more expensive) products. When the OKs were thinking about allowing carbon, the manufacturers suggested that the cost would NOT be significantly greater than the alloy ones then available (£600-700). They now cost significantly the wrong side of £1000.00 (this doesn't seem to be affected by the weight of material used - OK mast, unstayed, 8kg-£1100.00, check the price of a Phantom mast (stayed, 4kg)! To allow carbon masts with no minimum weight limit and no restriction on high modulus carbon, looks like asking for trouble. All the best, Bob

I don't think you can compare the International OK class with the British Moth Class as the rigs are so different. Since the introduction of carbon masts the OK seems to have had a revival all around the world. We did not have such restrictions on fibre modulus in the merlins.. you get some people going for one off specials from Chipstow all built with standard modulus fibre and others going for the off the shelf bullet proof superspars rig..

Does anybody really care about this expensive add on, and do they really need it? ? It's a bit like cars with electric sunroofs, only for posers, and an unnecessary expensive extra.

As you all know now you have been told by post (please let me know if you have not recieved it) The vote on rule 9a Spars will be taking place at Frampton on the 11th of Oct at 5pm. This is your chance to have a say in what happens. It would be great to see as many of you as possible at the meeting. The Frampton open is always a fantastic event with an excellent piece of water and a friendly welcome so why not bring your Moth along for a day out? There will be an evening meal being served so if you intend coming just for the meeting please let me know here so food can be sorted for you. It will be a good way to say goodbye for the winter as I for one will be packing Painted Lady away soon. New Boy

Hi I would like to thank everyone for the support I recieved on the issue of the rule change which was passed by vote at the E.G.M at Frampton sailing club today. The interest shown both for and against the rule change over the last 6 months has shown me that the British Moth has not only had a long history but that it has a long future ahead, as so many people are pationate about our quirky little boat. Thanks again New Boy

If there are any Moth sailors in the South West who are looking to move on to a Carbon Rig for next season we would be very keen to develop a rig for you. Price depending on Spec would be in the region of £700 (no vat) We currently produce a range of spars for the international Moth, National 12, EPS etc. One of our National Twelve sections could make an ideal Moth mast. For more information check out our web site, www.aardvarkracing.co.uk. or give me a call on 07972735607

Looks like interest in the Carbon Stick option is increasing...... Still very much untried in racing its good to note that after the initial support from Superspars two other Spar makers are making a play and offering some support. We thank Aardvark Technologies for their interest and will be speaking to Terry and the Crew in Banwell soon !

Hi Abby Not sure who to ask about this. It has been pointed out to me by several people now that the rule on masts has not been changed on the rules page. New boy
