As there is little forum activity at the moment I thought it may be interesting to share the progress of the new Xmoth planned to hit the water in March next year.and give a little insight into the process of building which I find almost as good as sailing. New 5mm Robbins elite ply was delivered in late November and the first panels are being prepared for the mould now.I have some 4mm Rotary cut sapele for the decks, nice old fashioned swirly stuff, like me realy.a tad heavy too,but not failed yet to get under 45kg,so in the next week the panels will be pressed and secured in the mould. I will try and attach some photos and give a roughly weekly update and respond to any questions/comments on a weekly rather than daily basis. Before you ask Abbey your boat is in the other workshop being fettled ready for varnishing, maybe this pm fingers xx d Cheers Graham

In between some fettling on Lapwing for Abbey ,889 has been recieving some attention, before securing the bottom panels I have been taping up the mould faces so any escaped resin will release when popping out the new boat. This activity marked on sharp relief the hull shape which by modern standards is all wrong with narrow v ed planing sections and set me off trying to flatten thing out a tad a couple of hours were wasted packing the mould and eying battens however the results whilst good in theory produced some nasty twists in the shape and I swiftly reverted to the sweet shape of the original Morrison lines, stop fiddling,I scolded myself and spent the next couple of hours intenslysplicing together the port bottom panels and fixing them in the mould, The aft sections upto 4ft from the bow are under little pressure to secure ,however further forward requires a lot of torturing which I will leave until the starboard panels are in and I can balance the clamping action to create the rounded scow bow of the Moth. This is the only realy tricky part of BM building and the mould takes away a lot of stress from me and the boat. I am now looking at laminating a centerboard blank from my pattern and will make this up to build the case around and build this assembly into the hull as soon as it is planked up,so now work is opening up on another front which will run alongside planking up. .Just ordered my new HD sail thinking masts too,a nice alloy rig I think! !Back to the Shed.

I Have just recieved my new activation key for the forum so thought a brief update would be in order. Over Christmas ,between courses ,the hull has been planked up and the bow formed and braced back to a bulkhead formed at station 9,ie 2745mm from the transom. So 889 now has its outer shell, and a new boat formed, the centercase is about to be coated and assembled then finaly shaped along the keel and bulkhead at station 6 used to locate in place. Domestic crisis however has struck ,the central heating boiler has packed up and our heating engineer advises us 4weeks delivery on parts so hand tools are exchanged for chainsaw and axe for fire wood, ply wood scraps burn producing very acrid smoke so need more fruit wood.More bad news boiler quote threatens new sail fund so check foresale section for nearly new moth combi, R+J sail and under cover.
