Whilst on the subject of hull stiffening, I am putting in some balsa wood ribs from cockpit bulkhead to around the mast position 5.0mm thick x 25mm high webs with epoxy fillets either side to stiffen up the old ply. I was wondering the view on washboards! they seem out of fashion nowadays, whilst I have some balsa i was thinking of installing them 75mm high in front of mast extending back to shrouds to keep the water out, any views? Before sticking me new decks in place, I checked the boat alignment, centre line, bulkhead positions and general squareness, pleased there was no twisting of the hull. However the shroud plates are out by 28mm from one side to the other. Can anyone tell me the optimum position measured from transom preferable, so I can sort this out before the fore decks go on. JH

Shroud triangulation points from Forestay position Measured 3 Boats at the weekend for someone else actually.
Here are the measurements.... In order...Forestay to Shroud Shroud to Shroud Forestay to front of Mast
700 - 1180mm,1200mm,640mm 733 - 1150mm,1185mm,600mm 790 - 1180mm,1150mm,630mm
Not saying these are the fastest position but two of these boats are quick but it is not just about stay positions .... but we could go on for ever about the other factors. Suggest you position the mast in the 600-650mm range unless you are using a dog-leg centreboard. The further forward you position the Mast the more problems you may encounter downwind with squaring off the boom...unless you rake the rig or have adjustable shrouds.
Good luck... RW

Getting close to completing 713's refurb, just wondering will she require re-measuring. I have taken lots of before and after photographs. Basically, 80% of fibreglass tape has been replaced with epoxy fillets, double floor, reduce some timber sizes, new front bulkhead from centreboard case to stem, balsa and epoxy fillet stiffening stringers on floor adjacent front of case, ply and epoxy inverted 'T' struts from shroud to front of case, new western red cedar side deck stringers and total re-deck. She was about 56kg before I started and I weighed her before putting the new ply decks on and that was 45.5kg, so I am hoping with paint etc to result in around 52kg. But she will be much stiffer and now built like a tank So hopefully last another 30 odd years. JH BTW i am now a paid up member of BMBA and look forward to doing the circuit and nationals this year. Very interested in the new JC ship, look forward to pricing
