Sound thoughts and comments Paul.. Your comments echo those of the Yachts and Yachting Boat Tester-Jeremy Evans said in his published Test last year...think he referred to Moths as "bumper cars" and "great fun to sail". These are the sort of comments that possibly need to be portrayed more to interested parties. Not neccessarily re-marketing but maybe illustrating virtues that may not have been highlighted before. New boats in my opinion are key to the Class,s continuance.Good S/Hand boats are indeed rare unless the buyer can re-vitalise an older boat and not everyone can or indeed wants to spend time doing so.Regrettably we can,t do anything about getting more reasonable S/Hand boats availablebut they do come up from time to time. As mentioned previously this Winter will hopefully see 3 possibly 4 new boats emerging in the Spring to join 870 and 873 launched in August this year.We need to encourage more new boats for the very reasons you have stated. The new Claridge all Plastic boats[when they become available]are so important to the Class and will give an option to the BMBA Hulls and all-wood versions offered by Godfrey Clark and Graham Pope. 2010 could be a good year for British Moths but we all need to support the Class when and where we can.Lets start with the Dinghy Show and then try to get to as many Opens and Events as we can. As for your reference to Racing and Socialising...Yes please both ! Among others you are well aware of our Mantra at Frampton ! Not all Clubs have the numbers to arrange Social events but I can thoroughly recommend you taking a look at the proposed 2010 Programme when it is out. There are several two-day events proposed which wil be a great opportunity to get together Race,Natter and perhaps down at Shandy or two !

Hi All ASBO will be on the stand at the Dinghy Show in 2010 complete with Carbon Mast, Boom and stock. ASBO Will also be sporting a new sail for the ocassion so should turn some heads. If anyone has any good photos that are sharp and able to be blown up could they email them to Abby or Myself and we will see if they can be used on the stand. The stand is a great place to show off our Boat but to do that we need help. In the new year we will be looking for help on and off the stand. New Boy

Hi With Two new design Moths available From Graham Pope and John Claridge I feel it would be a good time to start being active in promoting the class. The show was a real success in March but what do we do next? Answers in a small post or large if you have lots to say! New Boy

I started to consider this class after reading the article in Y&Y and now I've ended up with Fast One. The question is, can we get it into any other magazines or adverts for opens, championships or just BM's for sale?

Hi Tom Currently the BMBA does not have anyone in the Publicity position on the Committee. Abby,Mark and Graham all do and have done their best but Publicity is a "biggie" and can take up a great deal of time. The Dinghy Show for example does take a lot of planning. But, I for one, totally agree with you we need more exposure . Apart from articles in the Dinghy Press....possibly look out for another one in Y&Y in the future by the way...we need to keep the Web-site fresh, updated and with lots of pics, results and reports on.Again updating the web-site is very time-consuming and Bill has been especially busy this year but it needs doing. We are relatively a tiny Class and people prepared to give up their time to sit on the Committee are few and far between. This is in fact a major issue for all smaller classes. Regarding Opens and National Reports...we try to get all Clubs who have Opens to post a report on the web-site and send to Yachts & Yachting with pictures. This is very important and lots of people look at Y&Y Results regularly as they do at our own site. As for advertising Moths for sale....we of course have our own Buy and Sell section on the web-site but also boats occaisionally are advertised in Yachts & Yachting but also increasingly on E-BAY,Apolo Duck and similar Aauction type sites.Selling a boat is really down to the individuals preference how he/she wishes to sell a boat or equipment the BMBA perhaps provided the best and most obvious point for people to look initially. Back to Publicity...we will have something to shout about soon ! Apart from Severn Sailboats pretty X-Moths[Graham is building No 2 for Jezza "Banzai"Higson right now]we will have a new all plastic self-draining B.M. from John Claridge very very soon. We hope to see it in the next few weeks. John is also considering a deep-cockpit version too. There is also the possibility of another all plastic option being available but this may take a little longer to come to fruition. Lots as always to do but the most important thing is to get as many Moths on the water sailing for fun or racing.Good secondhand boats are rare but its new boats that will release these onto the market.... In the meantime we will continue to try to expand and promote the Class by "appearances" at Clubs who had a Moth Fleet or have a couple. This usually works and does generate interest in most cases. before every open day, at shropshire sc we send a few of the boats down to the square in shrewsbury (a busy place - two coffee shops attract a lot of students!) to draw interest. Is there anyway some of the more southern lot could go somewhere popular around them and just park their boats in town for the day (I'm not trying to imply anything) ? I would do it up here - but two boats isn't a strong image

Hi Tom Chippenham have and do this at least once a year. It is not just a Moth thing but they do have one out for people to see. Keep the ideas coming. It is interesting to see from younger eyes. New Boy

We are taking a Moth to the Paxton Lakes 24 hour race for the RNLI this weekend. Whether or not we sail it will depend on the wind forecast, which at the moment looks do-able, but as there is no moon, flying about in the pitch dark in a Moth....hmmm. Watch this space for what happens!

The best Publicity for the Class is sailing in Opens,Regattas,Special Events and Nationals and moreover telling and reporting[and its FREE !] to the Dinghy/Sailing World about it. Our ambitious 2010 programme with so many events arranged was very much a trial...we should not be afraid to try new things, try new venues or indeed new formats[points etc]. I congratulate Mark for at least trying....
Sure we have new Boat designs and layouts and the likelihood of more options being available thro the winter but it,s attendance at Opens and getting out and noticed on the water that counts and is probably the numero uno priority !
Unfortunately in a small Class we will see below expected turnouts from time to time.... This was the case at Cotswold S.C recently and will unfortunately be the case at BASC,Saltford this weekend on July 10th, and unfortunately Evesham had to be cancelled. As usual this is due to lots of reasons too long to list but we have had 2 fantastic Opens at new venues both with new Moth Fleets hopefully emerging this season already.... MWYC Leamington...a good turnout and a memorable event. This Club and venue deserves to be a Moth hot spot where the Class will do very well. Shropshire S.C......... another good turnout and a superb event. We hope the Shropshire Moths will grow in numbers as again they suit the water and sometimes tricky conditions. To contrast the lower than average turnouts at a couple of events thus far the forward entries for Whitefriars S.C. on August 1st. are already in the high teens and this is at a Club that has no Moths currently !
It would be really welcoming to see more attending Opens and the Nationals of course. With most of the Opens from August being relatively central with finale at Frampton the second half of the season is accessible to most and has both River and Lake venues...

The SESCA British Moth team (Moth Balls) sailed 818 - Thing One (wood) and 862 - Vaporour (grp), both Skinners in great conditions of brilliant sunshine, a good breeze and a lot of laughter to second place, just behind the Paxton Lakes Solo team who won (again). SESCA also retained the Visitor's Cup. Team consisted of Gary Tompkins, Tim Lupton, Abby Freeley and Ed Deacon. I am greatly indebted to Ed and Gary who sailed my last stint because by then the wind had filled in to the point where I can sail a Moth but not race one. Ed planed around for 2 1/2 hours and Gary for 2. The official results are not yet up on the Paxton Lakes site but we did get ahead of the Solos at varying stages to lead the event several times. SESCA Enterprise team (Split Pins) did amazingly well to keep a rapidly disintegrating boat going around and finishing in either 4th or 5th - my lack of sleep has caught up with me. This is a great event and it would be good to see more British Moths there next year. When Alan has written up the SESCA Race Report I will fill in the details here. Our thanks go also to Caroline Bird and Sam Keefe who brought son Andrew along while Richard and Helen went to Le Mans. Neither of them sail much (even if they are responsible for getting New Boy back in a boat) but they covered several of our duty stints meaning the rest of us got a little more relaxation time (note that I have not said sleep - Tim Lupton wants more Moth helms next year so all that sailing doesn't interfere so much with his social life). There are loads that "young" Mr Gribble has taken. Any chance he can put these on the website. If you look at the photos page there are none from 2010. I know Bill has them on his Facebook page etc
The photos of Bertie in various stages of repair are available if required, and maybe the odd short video, if I get time to edit what has been taken.
Photos and an up to date website tell alot about the class as do race reports in Y & Y.
Just a ramble I know, but also food for thought.

Please bear with us....Colin Hall has shouldered carrying the website because I sort of dropped it on him :>). I am trying to get to grips with how I 'moderate' the Forum without inadvertently deleting everything - which I came close to do the other night. We have a meeting this Saturday at which I hope to see if we can come up with a better way of doing the photos - they may end up on Flickr /Facebook (I have recently gone 'off' Google) or some such - if anyone out there has experience of photos on the Web that can be easily uploaded for association members to view that link to the website/forum that porno wierdos can't post to, please contact me. We very much agree that the website is a very important part of promoting the British Moth and we want it to look good and work easily - but like everything else we have to fit in learning it and doing it around sailing, full time jobs, usual rant... AND WE WOULD LOVE HELP!! You don't have to be on the committee to do this - and our thanks to Same-same and TT700 and Wild Bill Gribble for all their assistance past present and future. Thanks Abby

On the subject of Publicity .... There are articles that will be published in Yachts & Yachting in the near future. - First will be a Somerville Trophy 2010 Report with Pics. - Second will be an article regarding Carbon Rigs. Written by long time Moth friend and supporter David Henshall..Dave has put together an article on the Class,s Carbon developments and compared the rig and development with other deck-stepped boats who have adopted carbon...the Contender and Phantom. - Thirdly and probably timed to coincide with the 2011 Dinghy Show will be an article on British Moth developments over the last 2-3 years...Hulls,Rigs and Sails. Ive used Flickr for some considerable time now. For the little it costs I have had no problems with other parties putting on unsuitable photos (I do check on adaily basis). On our Scout Group website (www.19thmaidenheadscouts.org.uk) We have links to photos from stories and news items, all easily updated as appropriate. We have a limited number of Leaders who have authority to add information.
We did at one time have a skills database that was open for all to add, however like anything that the public have access to was constantly "attacked" by unsuitable material.
