Hello Thinking about acquiring and renovating a moth for my son. He’s nearly 15, just under 60kg been sailing a topper for a few years, just club racing, he sails at Rudyard lake in Staffs. Do not sail myself, just man the safety boat.
Please could someone advise if this is a sensible plan or would I be more sensible to pick him up a laser 1 instead (as advised by the club). I just thought the moth looks fun and always nice not to follow the herd or am I just being foolhardy?
Thank you Mark

Evening
Dependant as to what is sailed at Rudyard and whether he wants to sail in a fleet will determine the best course of action. I would always advise that he tries out various different classes to see what he feels comfortable in. There is always pressure to move up and coming sailors to the main stream classes as there is always plenty of advice and class support. His next stage will likely to be start going and seeing other clubs and enter open meetings.
The moth is unique in that it is a small class that is very friendly and has now been established for 87 years. It is a fun boat, a thrill in higher wind speeds but is also still sailable in light airs when some other classes will not venture out on the water.
I would advise that he has a go and am trying to think of who may have a boat locally to you to try. Off the top of my head these are likely to be Earlswood Lakes or Sutton in Ashfield SC. The first Moth open is at Leamington Spa Sailing club on the 7th April if you would like to have a look.
If I can be of any assistance please do not hesitate to contact me.
